Garry McKenzie stands in the middle

After graduating from SFU - Garry McKenzie started his career in the consumer packaged
goods business for companies like General Foods and Lipton. He spent 13
years as the Regional Director/Manager, Western Canada with Lipton,
where he helped to manage a $143million dollar business. He was responsible
for developing and executing sale and marketing plans that would match
corporate objectives and deliver expected budget goals.
In 1997, Garry left Lipton’s and made the jump to the National Hockey
League, where he was an integral part of developing the Marketing and Sales
department for the Flames organization. He negotiated the multi-million dollar
naming rights deal with Pengrowth Management Limited for the Saddledome,
increased advertising and sponsorship revenue, food and beverage
revenue and launched the Calgary Flames Third Jersey Program, which
helped to increase merchandise revenue. Garry also spearheaded the Save
the Flames Campaign for the 2000/2001 season through a very committed
ticket sale drive. Garry left the Flames in 2001, took
some time off, came back to do some consulting and then started with Corus
in September of 2002. Garry was the General
Manager of Corus Radio Calgary, which includes three very respectable
radio stations, Country 105, Classic Rock Q107 and AM770CHQR.

He takes over at Corus Vancouver replacing JJ Johnston

Another non-radio person running a "cluster."
I thought that company had learned it's lesson doing this before.
I wager he's never done a show, read a newscast on air, cut a commercial, wrote copy or news or done anything a newbie learns to do either in "school" or on the job.
If he has any understanding at all, it's in sales and possibly promotion.
He may be very capable at running a business but broadcasting is not the same as selling shoes or promoting a hockey team.
I wish him luck because the way the radio business is going, he'll need it.

I'm sure before Garry gets to know any of the staff, there will be some major house cleaning taking place.

The Vancouver cluster is not only home to one underperforming AM station that should be euthenized,
there are also two FM stations that are in dire need of some performance enhancing changes.

I'm sure Gar will come up with some solutions. Wasn't the multi million dollar morning show disaster
at Q107 hired from Montreal while Gar was in the captain's seat?

Lets review shall we...

2006 population - CITY of Calgary: 988,193

2006 population - CITY of Vancouver: 578,000

The 'hick' town is where?

I don't have the desire to look it up, but I'm guessing there are more corporate headquarters in Calgary than in Vancouver.

Isn't a Google search fun! :sign5:

Lets review the figures that count shall we...

2006 population - METRO Vancouver: 2,116,581

2006 population - METRO Calgary: 1,079,310

Metro Vancouver officially ends at Langley and Maple Ridge. In reality Abbotsford and Mission with a combined population of 159,020 in 2006 should also be included in the Metro Vancouver totals in my opinion, not to mention Chilliwack with its 80,892 residents. That would bring the total up to 2,356,493.

Metro Calgary ends in the middle of a prairie in all 4 directions.

The 'hick' town is where?

Finally got someone to be proud of their city instead of the constant griping.

I think he is from Vancouver but served some of his sentence in Alberta.

The proof the pudding is in the eating. - if Traffic 73 is still sitting at the bottom of the pile in a year - then we have a
semi for him to drive on the ice in the Yukon.

Have to agree he needs all the help he can get. His background is just not that strong to determine new strategy for the 3 out of the 4 Corus stations in Vancouver that need major surgery.

His working at Liptons for almost a decade and a half is totally different than running a bunch of radio stations.

Even his time at the Calgary Flames looks suspect. He joined them in 97 and then they needed a save the Flames campaign in 2000 and left right after that to consult.
