What's happening with Shore?

Postby groundskeeper willy » Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:54 pm

Heard that Astral lowered the 'boom' today, letting all staff go. Any bets as to when the new station gets rolled out?

The Shore website is pretty naked. Any references to jocks etc are gone.

Facebook pages belonging to former staff members indicate all or most of the staff is gone.

Sorry to see Jennifer Thomson and many others suddenly "on the beach".

I think we'll see the new station hit the air within the next two weeks. Astral production whiz John Masecar is away from his day to day production work to work on a "project" . .I wonder what that might be ..
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Sad everyone got fired.

But the new owners need to execute their vision. If it is Boom... the one in Toronto looks like it would work well in Vancouver.

Shore is running jockless. Just one boring unknown song after the other. It's succeeding at living up to the Snore 104 moniker.

Sorry about people losing their income, but I'm sure Astral was generous in the severence department. As for the music, no matter what they do, it can't be this bad.

Boom is the best thing that can be done with boring old Shore... no doubt about it!

Everyone but 4 people canned at Shore at 9:30 am.
All I have.

Been there, and all of us wish the best for the displaced. What a heartless business, but that has been the way it has been since I started back when Radio was a career.

What a sad end to a truly disastrous and naive application. I am keen to know whether some of the people like Zulanov, who were working for peanuts and shares, finally got their payout when Astral took over. I feel sorry for all the jocks, who have all seen their share of pink slips over the last few years.

These people totally confuse me. With the firing of the staff, the heart and soul of The Shore is gone. By looking at the ratings from the past couple of years, there wasn't a whole lot of listeners to
begin with so why play more of their favorite Shore music now that the station is no longer on life support? Let's do some old fashioned stunting for a week or two. Change formats every hour or two.
Go crazy playing oldies people haven't heard for years. Do something to draw attention to a frequency that most Vancouverites obviously don't even know exists. Make people aware that something
new is coming to 104.3. If you keep playing this funeral parlour music until launch time, there'll be nobody listening.

Oh wait a minute. This IS corporate radio, They'd know nothing about doing something creative and fun. I guess I was just having a flashback. Back to reality.

Bugs Bunny had a term for clowns like Astral.

"Maroons".

Agree that "We're going to make Shore better" is pointless if they're going to do a full-on format change.

So either;

1) They're going to keep the name and something resembling the format; or
2) Someone just hastily slapped that page together without thinking it through.

Plus, there's the fact of Astral's 4% drop in corporate radio revenues. Time to rip up the floorboards to use them as firewood. (Too bad when they realise they're living on a boat!)

The Boom stations in Toronto and Ottawa are both primarily 80's. I wonder how well they will do in a market with a Jack station that is well established. While the Toronto station is doing quite well, the ratings for Boom in Ottawa aren't great (1.5 share 12+ compared to BOB FM's 3.7 share)

Also, Shore has a 15% category 3 commitment, which would make doing classic hits rather difficult. Of course they may just use the Boom branding and do oldies, perhaps that's the plan and Gerry O'Day will be the morning man & PD.
