Report: Ron MacLean to return as Hockey Night in Canada host, replace George StroumboulopoulosJared Clinton
By: Jared Clinton on June 19, 2016
Hockey Night in Canada might have a different look next season, but it’s going to feel awfully familiar for Canadian hockey fans.
According to the Toronto Star’s Dave Feschuk, Rogers is set to replace Hockey Night host George Stroumboulopoulos with Ron MacLean, who Stroumboulopoulos had replaced in the host’s chair when the iconic program became part of the Rogers broadcast family. Stroumboulopoulos took over as host on the tail of his successful CBC interview show, and the hope was ‘Strombo’ would draw in and appeal to a younger audience.

The change hasn’t been made official by Rogers, and Scott Moore, president of Sportsnet, told Feschuk that at this point the reports of the switch back to MacLean are “simply speculation,” adding that no plans have been finalized for the 2016-17 season.
However, if the swap is made and Stroumboulopoulos is out as the host, it will mean he lasted only two seasons as the face of the program. There are no details regarding the possibility of Stroumboulopoulos continuing with the Hockey Night broadcast in any other capacity.
As for MacLean, his return would see him inch closer to 30 years as the host of the program. MacLean’s original run as the host began in 1986 and continued until 2014, at which point he was replaced by Stroumboulopoulos.
MacLean has remained with Hockey Night, though, working the first intermission with Don Cherry on Coach’s Corner and MacLean was host of the Sunday evening Hometown Hockey broadcasts. Cherry recently signed a multi-year deal to remain a part of Hockey Night, and MacLean, his longtime sidekick, will remain in the role.

Of course the d'bags at Rogers that made the moronic decision to go down that road in the first place won't miss a paycheck.

This was a no brainer move for Rogers. Ron Mclean, the pro, is the man, while Strombo (out of his league?) needs to go back to the CBC and do daytime interview shows presumably (and shamlessly?) pandering to his female guests in those gawdy red chairs.

The playoffs needs a serious re-tooling, like a Canadian division and a Yankee division, with the winner of both playing in the finals for all the marbles.

Otherwise, it WON'T be hookie night in Canada, anymore. But rather, an Americanized, Gary Bettmanized, version of our game !

Finally, Rogers should have a special oldtimer televised NHL edition of retired former stars, like they do in golf and televise it, with no body checking and modified rules, I think people would pay for that, including the young unns. They should have retired refs reffing, coaches on the bench, too, like Scotty Bowman, and so on. Hell, they could even have Don Cherry behind the bench, too and even the great one (Gretzky).

Why not bring back the old announcers, too, like Jim Robson, Dick Irwin, and Howie Meeker ?

Dick Irwin may be a 'Great Great Guy' (you're welcome Vancouver), but Dick Irvin was the hockey guy.
Houston, We're dealing with morons!.

Sportsnet confirms Ron MacLean to replace George Stroumboulopoulos at HNIC
The Canadian Press
06.26.2016

TORONTO - Ron MacLean is officially back as host of "Hockey Night in Canada," returning to the chair he occupied for nearly 30 years before being ousted in favour of music journalist and CBC talk show star George Stroumboulopoulos.

MacLean will host the early game on Saturday night next season while David Amber will take the helm for the late broadcast, Sportsnet announced Monday.

Stroumboulopoulos is leaving "to explore new creative opportunities," according to a Sportsnet release.

Stroumboulopoulos signed a five-year deal to host "Hockey Night in Canada'' in 2014 after Rogers acquired the NHL rights in a 12-year, $5.2-billion agreement. Pushing MacLean aside was a controversial decision by the broadcaster, with Stroumboulopoulos seen by many fans as an outsider who didn't have the necessary hockey background to replace his experienced predecessor.

MacLean, 56, saw his role reduced to being Don Cherry's sidekick on Coach's Corner and hosting "Hometown Hockey,'' a Sunday night show that he will continue to front despite his expanded Saturday night duties. He will also keep his job alongside Cherry, who recently agreed to a new contract.

"'Hockey Night in Canada' is a tradition unlike anything else in this country," Scott Moore, president of Sportsnet and NHL properties, said in a release. "It's part of our national DNA, and so is Ron. It's a balance of giving our fans what they want and evolving the broadcasts to keep them fresh."

News that the 43-year-old Stroumboulopoulos, a six-time Gemini Award winner, was on his way out was first reported a week ago by the Toronto Star.

"George is an extremely versatile and creative broadcaster and we value the contributions he made to Hockey Night in Canada," said Moore. "We look forward to seeing what his next great project will be."

It's been a tough year for Sportsnet's hockey coverage, with no Canadian teams making the playoffs and a last-place performance by the Toronto Maple Leafs, usually a big ratings draw for the network.

Audience levels fell below the million mark for many early-round playoff games this season. While ratings improved for the Stanley Cup final, they were down on average from last season.

Panellists Elliotte Friedman, Kelly Hrudey and Nick Kypreos will join MacLean and Amber in-studio Saturday nights. Daren Millard will continue to host the Wednesday night show alongside Friedman and Doug MacLean.

A veteran broadcaster, Amber has been a reporter with Hockey Night in Canada for the past five years.

From the Globe and Mail today :

Glenn Healy let go as Sportsnet shakes up hockey broadcasts

From the Globe and Mail :

Rogers Media cut a wide swath through its hockey broadcast personnel on Monday, dismissing at least six on-air personalities including Glenn Healy, who was the between-the-benches analyst on Hockey Night in Canada’s No. 1 crew.

P.J. Stock, Billy Jaffe, Chantal Desjardins, Corey Hirsch and Leah Hextall are also gone in a housecleaning prompted by a disastrous miscue by Rogers’s upper management regarding Canadians’ appetite for hockey, a mistake compounded by mediocre play from Canada’s NHL teams. And the 5 p.m. NHL pregame show on Saturdays on Sportsnet 360 was cancelled.

There was no immediate word on further job losses, although company insiders were expecting a larger number of behind-the-scenes people to be dropped as well. The bad news came just a few days after word leaked that George Stroumboulopoulos was fired as the main host on Hockey Night in Canada and would be replaced by his predecessor, Ron MacLean.

Also gone from Hockey Night in Canada is Damien Cox, who appeared in the second-intermission news and discussion segment with Elliotte Friedman. He moves to Toronto radio as Bob McCown’s permanent co-host on Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Prime Time Sports. Surviving the Hockey Night purge are Friedman, Kelly Hrudey and Nick Kypreos.

Rogers made the switch back to MacLean official on Monday, when the company announced that he will return to the job he held from 1986 to 2014 when Hockey Night was under the control of the CBC. But MacLean will only host the early Saturday night game, as he insisted he wanted to keep his job as host of Sunday’s Hometown Hockey, which sees him broadcast live from different communities across Canada. MacLean will also continue as Don Cherry’s sidekick on Coach’s Corner.

David Amber has been promoted from reporter on Hockey Night to host of the late Saturday-night game.

The cuts were particularly deep among Rogers’s regional and freelance crews. Desjardins worked on the Montreal Canadiens broadcasts, and Hextall worked Calgary Flames games. Hextall did manage to find work quickly as she was added to ESPN’s coverage of the World Cup of Hockey in September. Hirsch and Jaffe were freelancers.

Healy’s departure, which came as a surprise, means that the Hockey Night broadcasts will drop to a two-person crew from three next season. It likely means that the play-by-play broadcaster — Jim Hughson on the No. 1 crew — will remain in the upstairs booth, with analyst Craig Simpson moving down to Healy’s old spot between the players’ benches.

M O N E Y. You were making a good living. See 'ya. This all gets down to bucks.

The folks at Rogers are also getting squeezed from the lowered income form advertising.

The people that put the NHL deal together for Rogers, should be unemployed.

Bonehead play and an expensive one - buying the rights to a sport whose product is not being swallowed by an indifferent audience.
