Shaw rolls out pick-and-pay

Postby kal » Sat Nov 26, 2016 2:31 pm

Shaw begins rolling out Pick-and-Pay TV channel selection.

Ahead of the December 1 deadline for the CRTC-mandated offering of a la carte television here in Canada, Shaw has set up a page noting that individual channels will be priced from $3. It's not obvious yet how you might actually pick a custom set of channels. Perhaps that will clear up in the next few days.

However, don't expect true pick-and-pay. Shaw is requiring a minimum subscription to limited ($25) TV before you start adding on $3 channels.

These look like the "packs". At the bottom it says you can pick 10 channels for twenty bucks. I don't know if you can pick sports channels with that deal though.

Looks like Telus has rolled it out as well.

Sportsnet, TSN come as separate bundles for $14 a month.

No, they are all available individually ... that's a given. However, the pricing varies from $3 to over $20. I'm unclear on the Shaw 10 for $20 offering. That seems to be within various categories, although they do use the word "all". Let's see how that shakes out.

Are you referring to TSN/Sportsnet?

On the individual channels for Telus, it shows you must buy the entire TSN package to get anyone of the channels.

Same with Sportnet, you can't just buy Sportsnet Ontario, they are prompting you to buy East, West, Pacific and Ontario.

Telus may well be doing what you say but that is contrary to the CRTC edict. A complaint to the CRTC would be in order. The problem is that the CRTC did not spell out the pricing for a la carte.

I found this statement by TD this morning quite informative:
Now that all video distributors in Canada have been forced to offer channels on a pick and pay basis (recall that December 1 was the deadline and Bell was the only major provider to move to full pick and pay in March), we have reviewed the offerings to determine how much risk exists for incremental cord shaving by consumers, which could in turn negatively impact subscription volumes for broadcasters (such as Corus and Rogers Media) and video ARPU for cablecos and telcos. Our overwhelming conclusion is that the pricing and packaging of skinny basic and a la carte remain very unattractive relative to what consumers can get from existing channel packages and promotions. We believe the CRTC is likely to make more noise about this file in the near term, but we continue to see minimal risk for Corus or any of the carriers.
