Rogers to launch all-sports radio station in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – One of Canada’s largest and most passionate sports markets is about to get a lot more premium sports content, as Sportsnet will launch a new, all-sports radio station — Sportsnet 650 — in Vancouver this fall.

Rogers Media will acquire the Vancouver AM station CISL from Newcap Inc. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Newfoundland Capital Corporation Limited), subject to approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), and will change the station’s format to all-sports. The transaction is expected to close in summer 2017.

“We are excited to build upon our strong radio brands in the Vancouver market. With Vancouver being such a passionate sports town, there is a strong appetite for all-sports radio that delivers engaging conversation, wide-ranging opinion, and top-tier live sports content,” said Julie Adam, Senior Vice President of Radio, Rogers Media.

Sportsnet 650 will have year-round top-tier sports content, including Vancouver Canucks and Blue Jays games, plus the MLB post-season. Additional programming details and on-air personalities will be announced in the coming months.

“Vancouver has an incredibly loyal fan base, and this is a natural fit to expand our Sportsnet offering,” said Scott Moore, President of Sportsnet, Rogers Media. “Sportsnet has been strongly committed to the Vancouver community since the network’s inception in 1998 when we first began televising Canucks games.”

Sportsnet 650 marks the third all-sports radio station for Sportsnet, alongside stations Sportsnet 590 The FAN in Toronto and Sportsnet 960 The FAN in Calgary.

Senior Vice President of Sales of Rogers Media Al Dark says, “Sportsnet is Canada’s number one sports brand, and we are thrilled we have another platform for our advertisers to reach their target audiences.”

The AM 650 station will continue to be broadcast in its current format until Sportsnet 650 radio launches in the fall.

Rogers is the parent station of NEWS 1130.

We're going to have to start inventing new sports to justify all this sports bandwidth.

This certainly makes more sense than messing with News 1130's hugely successful format and it totally makes more sense than adding hockey PBP to one of the two Rogers FMs or converting one of the FMs to a specialty license.

As for the current impaired signal on 650, I'm sure it would make financial sense for Rogers to move the 650 TX to the 1130 site and run both stations from the #6 Road site. Newcap must be paying Pattison huge dollars every month for the lease there.

Pattison could then lease the old CJOR site to the recently licensed station on 600.

Can't imagine the status quo continuing at the two TSNs. Something's going to have to give.

My reading of the original CRTC application that was approved for 600 KHz Vancouver is that the Pattison site would be used for it, no matter what. The lower night power for 650 after the move to this site was to allow the existing towers to be used. The towers were used when 600 was last on the air, and the new 600 was approved with the same directional pattern(s). All of which tells me that 600 and 650 can share the same transmitter site.

Having just looked at the current CKWX tower layout -- three towers, with two used for the day pattern, and two used for the night pattern -- I'd have to guess that at least one more tower would be needed to handle 650, perhaps more because of the lower frequency, and longer wavelength. Which begs the question: does CKWX have enough land to add a tower or two in the required placement?

Jon......The application submitted by Sher-E-Punjab radio for 600 last year states that the towers will be constructed on a parcel of land next to the existing CISL 650 site.

From the application:

THERE IS ONE ISSUE WHICH HAS ARISEN SINCE OUR 2013 APPLICATION, WHICH WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RESOLVE. OUR 2013 APPLICATION PROPOSED TO USE THE TRANSMITTERS AND LAND USED BY PATTISON BROADCASTING IN THE PAST . IN THE INTERIM, PATTISON AND NEWCAP RADIO MADE AN ARRANGEMENT FOR CISL-AM TO USE THE PROPERTY AND THE TOWERS WERE TAKEN DOWN. HOWEVER, FORTUNATELY FOR US, THE PATTISON SITE ON LULU ISLAND IS ADJACENT TO A LARGE PARCEL OWNED BY DALE BADH AND WE HAVE SUCCEEDED IN HAVING A NEIGHBOURING LANDOWNER AGREE TO ALLOW US TO USE A PORTION OF HIS LAND AS WELL. OUR TECHNICAL BRIEF SHOWS THAT WE CAN VIRTUALLY DUPLICATE THE REACH OF CKBD-AM WHEN IT WAS OPERATING. NO OTHER POTENTIAL BROADCASTER HAS APPROACHED US TO USE THIS LAND AND NO ONE CAN USE THE PATTISON SITE.

This is not that surprising. ..My thoughts:

At least one of TSN1040 or 1410 will become something else; CISL's original licence condition of being a Richmond Station etc is not in effect anymore I assume...I know they've been more a Vancouver Station for years just wonder what if any conditions are on their current licence

That's a tight turnaround to get approved with the CRTC moving at a snail's pace, even with this being an obvious rubber stamp.

Which is not to say "Newcap" can't just launch SN650 in the meantime.

re: 1410, yeah logically they'd be toast....but their ratings have been non-existent for the entire time they've been sports. Bell seems to use it as leverage rather than a profit centre, so who knows...

Now, if they decide to get out of sports on 1410, I'd bet shutdown would be more likely than format change....which would make two 1410s they'd shut down.

Let's face it, the sports media business, be it in print, radio or television, is in decline.

Look no further than to the looming layoffs at Disney-controlled ESPN:

ESPN isn't in decline because sports media is in decline. They're struggling because of the dozens of regional and local cable sports channels that have shown up, compounded by soft national dollars for TV overall. They got where they were as a monopoly.

Some of that may be true but there is considerable evidence of audience decline for professional sports viewing on TV.
