Kerry Marshall out at Roundhouse

Postby flyonthewall » Tue Aug 01, 2017 12:38 pm

After hearing rumblings late yesterday about more changes at Vancouver's Roundhouse Radio, it was confirmed this morning that veteran Vancouver broadcaster Kerry Marshall is no longer
with the station. Marshall was one of the first hires at RHR in 2015 and was News Director.

Will this joke of a station see it's second anniversary?

I keep wondering how long it will take the money boys in Kelowna to realize the problem ain't the qualified air talents that keep getting shown the door.

You can only put so many duct tape patches on the Titanic before it and the captain sink into oblivion.

The episodes at Roundhouse remind me of the goings-on in the White House. Marshall as News Director didn't last as long as Sean Spicer!
Still, I wish him well. He's a veteran who deserves to make a living.

The big problem at Roundhouse is its format - simply a commercialized version of the CBC with at least the same kind and amount of liberal/SJW bias. At least CBC provides a little more variety with their music shows on Radio 2 and with their online music channels.

Looks like there is more change coming at RHR.

Kirk Lapointe has stated on his Facebook page that his show is ending August 25. He will continue to run a one-hour Business in Vancouver segment each evening.

Tom, I have listened whenever I'm in Vancouver.

Used to REALLY like their live all-night-show girl who is...also gone!

I give them full applause for their efforts but I've heard some refer to it as:

Doghouse Radio.

Even Outhouse.

Too bad; wish it had better coverage.

So now what? They get rid of all the overhead and sell out? It's been two years...

If Roundhouse does go up for sale, whoever buys it will most likely change its branding and format (which would be just as well, too).

Who would buy it though? The signal is restricted to the city of Vancouver itself, anywhere beyond that 98.3 is dominated by CKSR (Star FM) in Chilliwack. Perhaps an ethnic group who has a large presence in the city might be interested (such as the Vietnamese).

Dan you might know if there was a clause in the CRTC approval if they had to keep the same ownership/format for X number of years?

Call me crazy, but if 98.3 flipped to a format a la CISL, complete with paid programming on weekends, it might actually work. Live AM and PM drive shows, the rest of the day filled with music, very little overhead.

How About That said:

There was nothing along those lines in the original approval documents specifically directed at Roundhouse, however the overall CRTC policy regarding new licenses states:

3. The Commission reiterates its position that the sale of a newly authorized broadcasting undertaking brings into question the basis for the Commission's original decision when the licence has been issued following a competitive process. Consequently, during the first two years following the launch of a service, any transaction involving the licence will be normally denied, except where the applicant can demonstrate the necessity of the transaction as a result of a force majeure event. The Commission is of the view that this approach will ensure that the community benefits from the service as approved for a period of at least two years.
