Global BC/CTV Vancouver cross the line

Postby crs » Wed Sep 27, 2017 8:26 am

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has spoken and it's not good for Vancouver's top 2 supper hour newscasts:

Why do we need to waste taxpayer money on the CBSC? Who cares what they think? The broadcasters made a judgement call and some un-elected bureaucrats disagreed with it. I don't remember a big outcry from the public at the time the footage aired.

Not surprising.
Standards have been falling for years, due to the fact the professionals who know and enforce the rules have been fired, replaced by people who don't know any better.
Having served on both RTNDA and Broadcast News committees that considered ethical breaches, these infractions were quickly dealt with in the last century and the offenders were publicly censured.
As was previously posted, no wonder the 6pm news ratings for television are so dismal, a less than 4 share for any of the majors and no one watches any more.
On line, on demand is where it's at today.
Another indication of the fall of the TV "news" shows is the bottom of the barrel advertisers on most of them.
What once were filled with national spots now have shyster lawyers and rug merchants hawking their wares.
I don't know how the networks can continue to produce these turkeys even with reduced staffing by underpaid amateurs who believe they are stars in the community.
Like AM radio, television appears to be on the final descent into obscurity.

The CBSC is a national voluntary self-regulatory organization created by Canada’s private broadcasters to deal with complaints made by viewers or listeners about programs they have seen or heard broadcast on a participating station. The CBSC administers five industry codes covering various issues relating to ethics, violence on television, equitable portrayal, journalistic ethics, and cross-media ownership which set out the guidelines for television and radio programming. Our Associates include almost all private sector radio and television stations, from across Canada, programming in English, French and third languages. The CBSC was first incorporated on August 15, 1990 and was recognized by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on August 30, 1991 in its Public Notice 1991-90.

I stand corrected. So it's a self flagellation organization in lieu of hiring competent management at the news room level. Got it.

The CBSC is very much an early 1990s thing. At that time, a lot of Fields, Broadcasting among them, wanted to be considered a Profession. And be self-regulating like Lawyers and Engineers.

From the Consumer's perspective, it looks like a huge conflict of interest. Like Al Capone getting together with Mob leaders across the U.S. and forming a group to take care of anyone of their own who got out of line, and having the Police and FBI stay out of it.

Which is why, for example, provincial governments have more recently got involved in creating their own organizations for running the investigations of all serious Police actions, rather than letting the Police do it themselves.

Good point, Jon. The CBSC is a toothless, neutered tiger. It's NEVER a good idea when the industry polices itself. When lawyers and doctors police themselves, we have learned that it's clearly a conflict of interest. Good luck getting justice, if and when you are screwed over by those two professions.

The worst profession for covering its *ss is the insurance business. Try to make a complaint against a "licenced" insurance broker and see what happens.

The CRTC, is another toothless tiger, as well, and cannot even police itself from wrongdoing. So, how can we expect licensed tv and radio stations to voluntarily agree to standards that have no teeth, to begin with.

The final straw, as Mike points out, is when, one day, all terrestrial radio and tv will be made obsolete by the internet and when the CRTC tries to sink their teeth into you, you can then tell them to f*ck off.

More worrisome, though, is the erosion of human rights by law enforcement, specifically agencies like the CBP in the United States, asking us to cough up passwords to personal facebook sites, or the password to your cell phone, or be threatened with jail !

Meanwhile, when you and I incite violence or war on Twitter, the post is deleted. When Donald Trump threatens to destroy North Korea and its government on twitter, (some would say an act of war or violence) we are told in a CBS News report that, according to Twitter, Trump's posts promotes open government. But in reality, twitter is a business that gains $$$ whenever Trump tweets something foolish. So, clearly, the law on threats has two tiers; one for the wealthy and another for the rest of us.

How about the CBSC, instead of regulating potentially gruesome video, regulate bias, groupthink, copycat journalism and collusion in newsrooms? :(

Cheers,
Doug
