Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

What’s in a name? Well, for a quartet of singing Montrealers, The Beau-Marks seemed better than their previous group moniker The Del-Tones. But I’m not so sure about that.

Good things initially transpired for the rechristened quartet of Joey Frechette (piano), Ray Hutchison (guitar), Mike Robitaille (bass) and Gilles Tailleur (drums). Clap Your Hands started charging up the charts and The Beau-Marks became the first Canadian pop band to get on the Ed Sullivan Show. American Bandstand also hosted The Beau-Marks. Nevertheless, Clap Your Hands never rose past #45 on Billboard. One wonders if it might have charted much higher had the foursome chosen a less notorious name.

Beau-Marks was a variation of the BOMARC missiles. A well-known Cold War long range anti-aircraft missile, the BOMARC was quickly controversial in Canada. For one thing, it replaced the immensely popular, Canadian-engineered Avro Arrow fighter jet program that the Diefenbaker government abruptly scrapped in 1959. A year later, news broke that all the American-made BOMARCS on Canadian soil were nuclear-tipped. The Tories got cold feet and reneged on the agreement, infuriating the Yanks.

Meanwhile, in the US, the name BOMARC became synonymous with hazardous waste. On June 7, 1960 a helium tank inside a missile at Fort Dix exploded setting the nuclear tip ablaze. Weapons-grade plutonium oozed everywhere necessitating a 70-acre no-go zone on surrounding lands.

Given all that, it’s a wonder The Beau-Marks enjoyed even middling success with such an ill-starred name!
