CRTC: CHOF-600 Vancouver Decision This Coming Week

Postby jon » Sat Aug 11, 2018 5:11 pm

CHOF, the 600 KHz AM station that will replace KRPI-1550, is promised a decision from the CRTC this coming week on its application to increase power to 50,000 watts Day and 20,000 watts Night, and change transmitter location to Cloverdale's CKNW site. CKNW has already been off air a few nights in preparation for this tower sharing arrangement.

Since there were no Interventions, the decision is likely to be positive. If so, testing on 600 will almost certainly begin as soon as CHOF's transmitter arrives, if it has not already.

Then comes a full month of 24/7 test programming, after which KRPI's programming moves to 600. What happens next on 1550 is anyone's guess, and KRPI may well go "Silent". Of course, there may already be someone waiting in the wings....

As for CHOF, they have a well designed directional pattern than should even cover Victoria nicely, day and night. At night, however, there are tight nulls Due South and Due East.

The Commission approves an application to change the authorized contours of the unlaunched ethnic commercial AM radio station in Vancouver to be operated by Sher-E-Punjab Radio Broadcasting Inc. The technical changes are necessary because the land for the original transmission site was sold and the applicant has to move to another site.

Excuse my ignorance. Is this a case of an American-owned station KRPI closing down and re-emerging as a Canadian-owned entity? Or was KRPI owned by Canadians but operated and transmitted from the US?

Did the FCC have to sign off on this deal as well as the CRTC?

Actually KRPI 1550 dropped the Sher-E-Punjab identity quite some time ago (2 years perhaps) and has been airing independent Punjabi programming that they claim has nothing to do with the Sher-E-Punjab group about to launch on 600. Sher-E-Punjab is a Canadian owned company based out of Richmond which operated as an LMA on KRPI 1550 since the mid-2000's. As far as I know the FCC had no input on any of this.

Dan talks (above) about the on-air identity of KRPI. And explains, at least to me, why the CRTC even considered Sher-E-Punjab's application for 600.

Assuming that krpiradio.com is still KRPI's web site, there are still tie-ins with Sher-E-Punjab that seem just too important to be merely "forgetting to update their web site".

The Advertise link at the bottom of the home page takes you to a page that includes "Ready to grow your business? Please call 604 271-1550". The phone number is Canadian, of course, and owned by Sher-E-Punjab.

The home page itself says that KRPI is "carried on various SMCO[sic] stations across Canada including Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg". Those SCMO channels (subcarriers on FM stations) are paid for by Sher-E-Punjab.
