Vernon 12+

CKIZ 25.8
CICF 24.4

No info available for who the remaining 49.8 belongs to.

A good chunk likely belongs to CBC and the rest would be "others".
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

As a former broadcaster of some 30+ years, I find threads like this very interesting.
First of all, I am with Red Robinson and others on what is happening in radio.
I have been in management, on-air and everything else.
Today, radio stinks.
Radio has to re-invent itself to stay alive. Young pups are not going to listen anymore, with ipods and satellite radio etc.
So radio has to reach the baby boomers and the like.
Like it or not, radio has to reach the mature listeners. Give them information, give them good talk, give them good music (what is todays definition of good music?)
I live on Vancouver Island, and let me tell you, the group of radio stations Pattison bought needs some kicks in the butt. Terrible programming, ignoring the listeners needs. We have had a series of storms in the last couple of weeks, and we have to get our information on what is happening from Vancouver.
Re-invent the radio game, that's what is needed.

welcome on board mobile listener

lets start a debate that probably has had the exposure and needs little but more...but why not.

I hear from the young people in the business today that it is exciting and they are willing to put up with low wages for an opportunity to work in major centers inside a radio station.

That was the same as when we entered the field many moons ago.

Maybe we are just the old farts who wont say die and want to control our world for as long as possible.

My proposal which is absurd but hey why not

leave the AM for the old people with news, sports, talk etc

and let FM go its way with music and limited personality for the younger set.

But if you look at the ratings generally - am is not doing that well and most owners will flip to FM as soon as they can.

the afore mention a bit confused and convoluted - but hey its friday

Hey Doggie! I resemble that remark! ;)

And you know what...when that alarm goes off at 3:15 in the morning, I look forward to going to work... (OK, a lot of it has to do with not fighting traffic)... but the job is what you make of it.... just like any other profession.

Well, T.Dog, let's go through the check-list of stuff I've heard about:

Low pay.
* No change
Dumb management decisions.
* No change.
Owners are cheap.
* No change.
Outdated equipment is falling apart.
* No change.
Employees gripe that things are getting worse.
* No change.

So what exactly IS it that's different today compared with 30 years ago, other than I had more hair?

Cart Machine:

What is different today from "yesterday" is that radio served the listeners not the bean counters.

Cartie: Not that I like to argue with one of my contemporaries but where the hell did you work?
Sure, my first job at 'OV paid peanuts.
But the station had great talent from whom to learn and top grade equipment.
The next step up the ladder, to Lethbridge, saw a good improvement in pay and more great people both in management and on air.
The equipment was crap when I started but we still made great radio.
It improved during my term there.
The same with my start in TV at CJLH.
Crappy old equipment but great people.
CKXL in Calgary was another great place to work and another boost in pay.
The best place to work was at CHUM Toronto, where I put in two stints of 5 and 11 years. Great people at all levels, great equipment and great money.
CJCA in Edmonton was the same, CFRA in Ottawa, CFRB in Toronto and even 680 News, which did have managment problems but everything at every station for which I worked was pretty much top drawer. We won't discuss my last radio job, the one here in Vancouver. Now, at CTV, I get to work with great people again.
My experience obviously conflicts with yours.
Sure there have been jerks and no talent along the way but they were in the minority.
And as I got later into my career in radio, that's when more problems began with management and owners with very little clue as to how the business is supposed to work.
Someone once said: "you gotta spend it to make it" and no one ever increased real profits by cutting staff and service."

With Standard aquiring SILK it was only a matter of time before Pattison requested a flip to FM, They better get ready for lots of phone calls from the locals who love their talk. Even though most are over 65 they are extremly loyal. They say that they will continue with some talk, we all know that will only last till the first book and then it will be gon.

Bruce Davis is so tight with money that he sqeeks when he walks, there will be very little promotion and even less once it is up and running.

Surprised that it took them so long to apply, probably trying not to trigger a call for a new license. Remember Westbank and the Westside is larger than Penticton and there are three stations there.

Only Independent in the OK Vally is CIGV and they lost a bundle of share in those ratings.
They need big changes, and mostly in management.
