McDerment has been sentenced to 9-month in jail and 24-months probation. He is currently out on bail. Conditions to be set tomorrow. Jamie Trevor McDerment pleaded guilty to 2 counts of possessing child porn back in September. In a Kamloops courtroom Thursday the 24 year old former Merritt radio personality is facing sentencing for his crimes. In a joint submission Crown is calling for 9 months in jail and 24 months probation on the 3 charges. Earlier today he pleaded guilt to 1 charge of voyeurism -- adding to the 2 charges he already faces. On August 4th last year McDerment's house was searched after RCMP were tipped off that McDerment had uploaded child pornography to the internet. They found 84 photos and 24 videos on a laptop, and 24 photos and 6 videos were found on an iPhone. The photos involved men engaged in sex acts with boys aged 10 - 15 years old. McDerment was also found to have taken 3 photos of young boys using the bathroom at Riverside Park just days before the arrest. The judge is still going over sentencing options.

Always sad to hear news like this. Jamie started in broadcasting with high hopes and a lot of exposure. Radio was not overly kind like it is to many.

I hope the training programmes to be offered will help in finding out the root of the problem that usually comes down to his early years and whether he was raised in a stable family environment.

I sincerely hope for the best for Jamie.

First, a very poor choice of words in the second sentence of the above poster.

But to the topic, I have no sympathy for this criminal and hope he gets some serious jail time, but I won't be surprised if it is substantially less. It's too bad the Kamloops media seems to not be concerned about updating its stories.
It's people like McDerment that keep the market for this type of abuse, active.
Shut down the market and slow (you'll never end) the abuse of children.

Watching tonight's news on CFJC TV's website, (would have been nice if they'd updated the website story) both the prosecution and defense have submitted to the judge that McDerment should serve 9 months in jail and 21 months probation. Judge will make it official Friday.

Not entirely sure, but that might explain why PSR has chosen not to post the story. Although I doubt he's an active moderator at this time. He apparently plead guilty late last year, and I'd be suprised if he was allowed to use a computer. His twitter hasn't had a tweet since the summer.

Man with child porn heads to jail with nine-month sentence

A former Merritt radio personality will go to jail for nine months and be forbidden from being around children for five years after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography and voyeurism.

Jamie McDerment, a small and slightly built 24-year-old man, was led away in handcuffs by two sheriffs Friday afternoon after being sentenced in provincial court.

At the end of Judge Stephen Harrison’s sentencing, McDerment began to quietly weep. Before being led away he burst into tears, turned and walked over to the gallery, momentarily hugging his mother in the front row.

RCMP were alerted this year by American authorities who suspected McDerment of accessing child porn on the Internet. When police raided his house, they found more than 100 images as well as videos on a computer and mobile devices of children engaged in sex among themselves and with adults.

“They are acts of a horrendous nature, acts from which Mr. McDerment took sexual stimulation,” Harrison said.

The provincial court judge agreed with a joint submission by the defence and Crown, who called for nine months of jail followed by probation.

McDerment has no criminal record, co-operated with police and entered an early guilty plea. But Harrison said it is particularly disturbing that police also found covert images he admitted to taking of young boys partially naked in a bathroom at Riverside park in August.

While child pornography is “passive,” Harrison argued, voyeurism “is a real act in a real world, not a virtual world.”

McDerment is the father of an infant daughter, but he will face severe restrictions in being around her or any child or youth for at least five years.

Harrison placed a condition that McDerment not be in the presence of anyone under 16 for a period of five years, unless with the consent of a probation officer and with another adult.

The court heard evidence that his wife had no idea of his activities and left him as a result. McDerment also breached a court order by calling her frequently at her home in Clinton.

Psychiatric reports prepared for sentencing showed McDerment has a lack of insight into his actions and a narcissistic personality, “features one tends to see with psychopathic disorders,” Harrison said.

Those traits may hinder his rehabilitation.

As part of his two-year probation, the sex offender must report to probation offices, take counseling as directed and cannot contact his wife and daughter, unless she requests it.

He also can’t be within 100 metres of his wife, daughter or any school, playground or place where children might be expected to attend. McDerment is also banned during the probation from possessing a camera or any device that can access the Internet.

The phrase above, "a breach of his probation", would indicated he previously was sentenced. But it is an error in the story, which should have read "breach of his bail conditions" as the story below from the Kamloops Daily News explains.

Wife shuns man charged with possessing child porn

The wife of a Kamloops man charged with possessing child pornography wants nothing to do with him, a judge was told Thursday.

Jamie Trevor McDerment was in provincial court seeking to vary the terms of his bail so he can have contact with his common-law wife. He told the judge he wants contact in order to help out with the couple’s finances, as well as to explain his side of the charges to her.

McDerment told the court he feels there has been much misinformation passed to his spouse since charges were laid, adding he believes the RCMP’s package of evidence has mistakes.

The man is charged with possession of child pornography and importing or distributing child pornography. Little is known about the investigation, how police came to know of McDerment or what led to the charges. Investigators continue to examine computers seized from the man’s house.

Prosecutor Chris Balison told the court the Crown has talked with McDerment’s spouse and she has no interest in having contact with him.

Judge Chris Cleaveley dismissed the man’s application as a result.

McDerment is also charged with one count of breaching his bail, by calling his spouse. The judge warned the man not to make that mistake again, as he could see his freedom on bail quickly cut short.

A former Merritt radio personality convicted of possessing child porn as well voyeurism has been released from jail and is now back in Kamloops. Jamie Trevor Mcderment was convicted in January after investigators found photo's and video of men involved in sex acts with young boys, as well as pictures of young boys using the bathroom at Riverside park. Cynthia Davis, with the Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling centre, says the public needs to know that McDerment is not allowed contact with children under the age of 16. McDerment is currently serving two years probation with a number of conditions.

In the case of a terrible background, the 24 year old is but a child. Legally an adult, I agree. A father, a husband.

The same amount of heavy concern is not shown in a recent case of a seasoned tv reporter who was heavily involved in actual sexual abuse.

Cut this young man some slack - his road will be hard enough as it is. I would hope he could re-locate to an area where he could work at something physical and get rid of the demons.

Do I agree with Canada's justice system. No. But you have to hear all the evidence somethings to fully understand it.

Displaying large pictures of him on Radiowest is not the answer as well.

I'm glad a large picture was posted not only here, but I hope in every central interior newspaper as well.
It's people like him that allow the child porn industry to exist and I don't think a big enough book was thrown at him.

As for Bencze, it's disgusting. I don't know what kind of sentence should be imposed.

As while we're talking about the Justice system, I think it's a travesty that Monty Robinson got a 'get out of jail free card'. I see today even native leaders are saying his heritage should NOT have played a roll in sentencing.
