It was never any secret that Sonic-FM original Rick Lee was leaving Edmonton for "some place in British Columbia". And it always made sense that he would join former Sonic PD Al Ford at Jack-FM Vancouver.
The Jack-FM Vancouver web site now includes Rick from 3-8pm weekdays. Even using one of his recent Sonic pics.
It has been a decade since Sonic signed on in Edmonton, initially running out of a construction trailer at the temporary transmitter site right beside the highway to Calgary. Rick and Al were two of the originals. Both weathered an ownership change, and both have done an "inside move" to another Rogers property, Jack-FM.
Rick is not a stranger to Vancouver, doing mostly all-nights at Z95.3 just after the turn of the century.
I have yet to find anyone who doesn't think that Rick is a really nice guy. He even set up a scholarship for students in broadcasting at NAIT in Edmonton, as part of his overall plan to mentor future broadcasters.
His last show at Sonic was last Friday's PM Drive, doing fill-in and leaving his regular Midday slot jockless. He began the shift with his first aircheck. Well, almost. It was an 11 year old Rick trying to sound like the DJs he knew and loved.
He threw open the phone lines and, between the music, spent the entire show playing the best calls he got in answer to the question: what do you like best from the first 10 years of Sonic?
