Of course, the decision could already have been made in "The Centre of the Universe" Rogers HQ in Toronto without any input from local management.

If not (or if HQ gets talked out of it), I don't see The Bounce getting KiSS branding, since they are tied for #1 with Virgin in the 3-way Top 40 war here, and The Bounce is, in essence, heritage branding. At the time, that Bell signed the station on the air, there was no Top 40 station in the market, and they hired the PD of the former Top 40 powerhouse, Power 92, as Station Manager. I've got to believe that there is value in The Bounce name in this market, much like there is in the QM-FM name in Vancouver. Even their Loyal Listener Club is called "The Bounce Nation".

Likewise, Sonic in Edmonton, which is essentially a thirty-somethings male-oriented modern rock station, not a teen-oriented Top 40 station like Vancouver's former Sonic. Sonic Edmonton has had the same branding since signon; rating are down a fair bit over the years, but still respectable.

Biggest joke would be if Rogers renamed World-FM as KiSS 101.7.

CHTT 103.1 Victoria is now back to it's Rogers roots. In January of 2004, HOT 103 FM was ditched to make way for JACK FM.

Rogers acquired the then low powered CKMO 103.1 from Camousen College in exchange for CJVI 900 along with a deal to maintain the AM 900 transmitter site for a number of years.

I guess the thread could have been titled ... JACK OFF, KISS ON in Victoria! a reverse of the KISS OFF, JACK ON headlines we used when the then KISS FM's in Vancouver and Calgary switched to JACK FM in 2002 and 2003.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Regardless of all the format changes at 103.1 tried by Rogers, the call letters of this station are CHTT which likely does not bode well for this station going forward as CHR.

With call signs like that - I would have fun with it!

"Our Radio is CHTT - 24/7 .." "CHTT Happens"..... "The Best CHTT on the Dial".

Oh well.

"You think you know JACK? You don't know CHTT"!

or...

"Don't say hello. When your phone rings, answer with the phrase that pays: "I just CHTT myself".

Great discussion on Call Letters, but I can't help remembering a dozen years ago when many stations stopped mentioning their Call Letters altogether.

Some Legal Beagle had discovered that the CRTC does not have any regulations stating that Call Letters ever be used On Air. And the concept spread to other stations.

What Mr. Lawyer Dude forgot is that Canadian Broadcasting is regulated by two bodies: CRTC and Industry Canada. The regulations about hourly call letters, frequency and location are Industry Canada's, not the CRTC. The CRTC also requires that stations always be in compliance with all Industry Canada regulations.

There were some not so friendly reminders from Industry Canada after about 6-12 months of no IDs, and the stations I've heard seem to all be in compliance these days.

By the way, the division of power between Industry Canada and the CRTC has its genesis in the era of World War II, before the BBG.

Thank you for that, and for your general indulgence in my questionable level of maturity.

In the words of the immortal Larry Lujack: "I wanted to be a radio dj when I grew up. Then I found out you can't do both".

"KISS" - coined in the 80's and still a go-to identification? Really?

What are these people thinking? Is this the best a whole room full of (supposed) large brains can produce for a new radio enterprise?

Somebody needs to get a spankin'... and a pinkish blow-out memo.

While I totally agree that "KiSS" seems ridiculously out of date as Branding today, I may want to talk to some Twenty Somethings before concluding that.

What makes me think that it may still be relevant? History.

KISN (metro Portland) and other stations used the branding in the early 1960s, and did very well with it. Just before it took off again in the '80s, I'm sure you would have been laughed out of the room for even suggesting something so old and outdated. Kinda like suggesting, about the same time, that Twist music would bring back the Dance music craze of the Disco era. Even Chubby Checker wouldn't have seriously considered trying that if a record company suggested it.

It is surprising how, when it comes to Pop Culture, what is Old is suddenly New again. Like my teenage nephews who consider the word "Cool" an important part of their vocabulary. By 1970, I wouldn't be caught dead using the word.....

Oh well.

They just gotta have a listener rewards program for their groupies called The CHTT Disturbers.
