Eckford Out At NW

Postby radiofan » Tue May 12, 2015 8:40 pm

Word from the TD Tower today is that PM Drive host Michael Eckford is no longer with the station.

There has been rumblings from within the TD Tower since last week that changes are coming.

Eckford has been absent from the NW airwaves since last Tuesday.

The show has been listenable the past few days with Sean Leslie filling in.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

What's the deal with Michael Eckford & CKNW

Postby Blabbermouth » Wed May 13, 2015 10:41 am

It appears Michael Eckford has resigned from CKNW. Any idea what happened there?

What's the deal with Michael Eckford & CKNW

Postby arthurdent » Wed May 13, 2015 10:45 am

Here's what NW posted on Facebook:

Dear CKNW listeners:
Our afternoon host Mike Eckford has decided to step away from the microphone and take the opportunity to spend uninterrupted quality time with his young children. Mike has brought a unique perspective to talk radio and his style, personality and passion will be missed on CKNW. Please join us in wishing Mike all the very best in the future. An announcement on a new host will be made in the near future. Your comments and feedback are always welcome and I can be reached at programming@cknw.com.

Hearing all kinds of rumours about Michael - but - since it is second hand, I don't know for sure.

I think he also does some stuff for BC1 - so who knows?

In any case, he is gone and CKNW is looking for a new host.

Wonder if SHAW will welcome Mike back - and he will work with Fiona again.

Time to shuffle the chairs.

Do they bring McComb back to afternoons and get a morning show that's not quite so depressing and sleepy?

Why not reinvent the wheel? Get Mike Smyth for 9 - Noon, Simi from Noon to 3 actually talking to listeners again rather than reading tweets and FB messages.

Get Sean Leslie or someone with a news background for 7 - 10PM. I think people are sick and tired of reviews of what was on TV last night and other so called trendy stuff.

Then again, it might just be too late to try and revive the dog that is now terminal.

What's on the air now ain't working.

As for Eckford, maybe it's time to get back into the construction biz.

I think that CKNW running ads for Marijuana Dispensaries, speaks volumes about how desperate the Dog is.

All media is getting squeezed, (*just look at how desperate Rogers is about OMNI and some of their other properties) and you can bet CKNW is losing ground.

We are going to see a TON of changes, at a lot of properties.

Staff: my advice: take the buyout, if offered and get a new career.

Well, the real reason they play marijuana ads is to attract the younger audience, didn't ja know, man ! :yahoo:

Seriously, 'NW has got like a "7" market share, so that means - according to Don Shafer - they gross about 7 MILLION a year.

How many millions a year do y'all make !

Too bad that younger audience doesn't listen to or even know what a radio station is, let alone an AM station that even their grandparents don't listen to anymore.

The 7 million a year is pretty pathetic compared to the several million a month they brought in with a 22 share not that many years ago!

Seven million a year?... Meh... Your neighbourhood local Costco outlet can make that much in a single week...

Take a look at CORUS' quarterly reports (*google 'em - it's a public Company)....and check the erosion of the bottom line.

In Vancouver:

The rent at the "Black Tower" alone, must be killing them.

The Marijuana Dispensaries, appeal to many age groups....not just 23 year old punters.

Oh well, just hope it works out for the staff - as the job layoffs in media, are something else.

From this morning's Broadcast Dialogue:
Justin Wilcomes, better known on-air as Drex on CKNW Vancouver’s evening programming, began pitching
medicinal marijuana on-air last month (for Eden Medicinal Society). So far as anyone knows, the station is the
only one in North America doing spots for grass. The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has no policy
against marijuana ads and CBSC executive director John McNabb says he isn’t sure which provision a complaint
would fall under. Drex is a medicinal marijuana user and says it’s strange that governmental, industry, and
advertising standards organizations don’t seem to know what’s allowed.

Recent efforts are not doing the once-mighty 'NW any good. Numbers are the lowest ever. Shifting the reporter sign-offs won't help either.

Let's give the Brand Director a show of his own so he can show his employees just what it is he wants them to do on the air. Or, hire some capable people to do the job properly right out of the gate.

It's called dope for a reason and Rex proves that every night.
