CIVL 101.7 FM Receives $50,000, Now Hiring, for Fraser Valley Music Awards

Abbotsford (July 20, 2015) – CIVL-FM, the community-based campus radio station at the University of the Fraser Valley, based on the Abbotsford campus, is pleased to announce that it was awarded $50,000 for the implementation of “The Fraser Valley Music Awards and Promotion Initiative”. These funds were made available by the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) under their Radiometres program, a program that aims to improve local programming, volunteer training and community members’ participation. It’s not the first time the station’s received funding from the CRFC; a total of $115,177 has been awarded over the past 5 years. (Active Job Posting: http://tinyurl.com/p7gkbxz )
CRFC funding at CIVL has gone towards developing and sustaining local daily news content, operating our first ever fundraising drive, allowed UFV students to study where their fees go through survey statistical analysis and on air discussion, and our biggest grant until now, the Resource and Academic Development and Integration on Campus (RADIO Campus) Project, helped UFV students earn credit for their academic courses through contributing directly to regular CIVL operations.
With the funds received this year, the station will focus exclusively on working with local independent artists of all types and backgrounds to help provide them with a platform to promote their work through: a) a local show, broadcast live on CIVL Radio, where awards, performances, and celebrity appearances help provide recognition and an engaging and effective way to promote and celebrate local music; and b) a music compilation of Fraser Valley artists that will be circulated to promotional, media, and broadcast entities across the country. Visit www.civl.ca for station info.
“This project has the potential to be the most impactful and recognizable initiative CIVL has ever been involved in on any scale,” says CIVL Station Manager Aaron Levy, thrilled about the opportunity.
“The CRFC was created in 2007 with the intention of fulfilling the needs of the stations,” says CRFC’s president, Mr. Roger Ouellette. “This is the reason why, over the past year, we have doubled the funding envelope offered to stations, brought the available funding per station from $30,000 to $50,000, and offered a partnership option with increased amounts.”
The CRFC supports more than 175 licensed campus and community radio stations across Canada. Its programs aim to strengthen local news and community programming, promote local music and emerging artists, support emerging distribution technologies, and contribute to the sustainability and capacity to effectively serve local communities.
