A former CKNW employee told me that Newsmen (there were no Women doing News there back then) were scheduled to work 7 day weeks in the 1960s.

News shifts were 8 hours straight at CHQM in the early '70s. At CJOR during that same period, when George Sillery was the News Director, he would work 14 hour on-air shifts to cover vacations and departures.

I'm less familiar with the lives of News Reporters, but I've heard stories of them working 24 or more hours straight when one or more big stories were breaking. For many years, friends of my in-laws rented the other half of their duplex to a well known Edmonton reporter and said that she was rarely at home.

Even AM Drive hosts are expected to attend evening events on a fairly regular basis.

In a recent Poll - Newspaper reporter was voted WORST JOB. Radio Announcer was #4.

Gee, why don't they just get the people a tent? They can live in the Parking garage.

You are available 24/7? At work to start at 4:00am? Ever tried that?

Best wishes to all who have the jam to handle the above.

Quote from the job posting:
"Responsibilities:
1. Deliver news content in an engaging, factual, and entertaining manner"

A response:
News is the most up-to-date and noteworthy information about current events.
News is something new and engaging that the Radio/TV audience has never heard before.
News is Who, What, When, Where, and Why...

News is not "info-tainment"...

With respect, I beg to differ.

The ad calls it a morning show for a reason. If it doesn't entertain, there will be no audience.

My old manager at CFQC in Saskatoon was a fellow named Roy Currie. He ran the radio side. He loved to tell his news people something like: "We spend a lot of money helping you gather news: vehicles, recording devices, a desk, a telephone, typewriter and so on. And none of it is worth a fiddler's fart until you get it on the air."

Simply stated: If you blow the performance, you might as well stay home.

That was 50 years ago. The days of just reading news are long gone, folks.

An old radio sage once put it to me this way.
"It's journalism when it's in the typewriter, but it's show biz when the red light goes on."
And by the typewriter reference you can figure out when that bit of advice came down.

I'm guessing Big Al cause McKeech told me once that Al had said those words, or something similar, to him.

Maybe find out what their format is first before you start making salary demands. ;)

Jack knows full well what the current CKWX format is...
That's just Jack... being Jack... :-)

(... as well as making a historic reference to what the 'WX 1130 radio format used to be back 40 years ago... )

If News is properly researched, properly reported, and broadcast first and accurately ... ahead of any and all competition... there *will* be an audience.
Radio's history right here in Vancouver has proved that to be true time and time again.

Well, said, John !

Translation: refrain from using tawdry "crutches" during the newscast *i.e. "info-tainment type" garbage news; what clothing does Kim Kardashian wear, how big are the tits of a certain actress. As long as news directors of newsrooms use these types of silly crutches, your audiences will always suffer, because it's a lazy type of journalism, the type that reeks of lazy bullsh*t ! (and most of you are either lazy or you don't give a sh*t!)

Thanks JK for knowing me so well and yes we both live in the history books

To the last fella/gurl - nice to have some honest on here.

A news format/wheel/can have the Hollywood report, sports, weather, traffic but if there is no NEW news on the news station or someone else is beating them ( i.e. NW or CBC - even TV you will carry on only with the audience that is a bit fixed.

If you want to be a leader and attract an audience you have to have the latest and a personality that draws a crowd. NW operated with "Thirsty" :occasion5: for quite a few years - using all the other actors to entertain.

There is a big difference between personality oriented news and entertainment driven "news".

Reaon Ford and the late Tammy Moyer put more personality into their morning news block than most music station morning shows do. And they did it with real news and information rather as opposed to CTV's 5:00 News which has become a small town version of Entertainment Tonight, not a real newscast.

Replacing Tammy won't be an easy task, but I di hope the folks on Ash Street spend the $ for something more than a recent BCIT grad with no experience or personality. Maybe they should look at getting back a Dianne Newman or Joanna Mileos.
