CHQM-FM: First HD3 channel in Canada?

Postby jon » Fri Jun 03, 2016 12:35 pm

Gord Lansdell is reporting on nwbroadcasters.com that CHQM-FM is now broadcasting TSN 1040 on its HD2 channel and TSN 1410 on HD3; as always, HD1 is "the mother station", CHQM-FM itself.

I haven't been keeping careful track of all points East, but I think this represents Canada's first "permanent" use of an HD3 channel with IBOC technology. I'm sure that Dan Sys can correct me if I missed one.

Speculation previously was that Bell would put one of the TSN AM stations on each of its FM transmitters. This use of HD3, of course, is a less expensive approach, and it also leaves room for some unique HD service on Virgin 94.5.

Actually FRESH FM (CING-FM) Hamilton has been using HD 3 for a few months. HD2 is AM 640 and HD 3 is CHML. First for the west would be accurate.

I did a bandscan when I was on the road. Both stations appeared on the screen and sound great.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Also CJSA 101.3 in Toronto utilizes HD2, HD3, and HD4 channels with separate ethnic programming on each.
