Original Subject: 1410 flipping from Sports?
Some kind of announcement/update next week. Let the specualtion begin. But it doesn’t appear like Vancouver will have 3 sports stations for long.

Back to the glory days of the C-FUN 1410 AM frequency, playing the music of the era that made the 1410 AM frequency great with live disc jockeys who have something interesting and entertaining to say between each song. OR

A classic country format, again with personalities who can combine their hosting/mc-ing skills with the country music of the 60's, 70's and 80's to present programming that holds the interest of the target audience.

But please, not a voice tracked, computer run radio station that needs no more studio space than a phone booth.

Both of those music options would lose money, so no...not going to happen.

I have been described as a “miserably cynical sot.” Maybe that’s why I’m wincing at (perish the thought) 1410 going 24/7 infomercials, perhaps with top-of-hour mini news & weather.

From the money perspective, easiest way to make a buck with 1410 would be to split the broadcast day between all the infomercials that 650 is no longer running and brokered ethnic programming from whoever still does not have a CRTC license. 1600 Radio India, isn't it?

I don't believe any of that would require CRTC approval.

Admittedly, that would be an even sadder fate for what was once the great CFUN. From the Top 40 perspective, 1410 actually had three separate lives (i.e. - distinct periods playing Top 40 successfully): pre-CKLG (1960-64), CKVN with Terry David Mulligan as PD (1970-71), and the final one, beginning shortly after CHUM bought them and re-acquired the CFUN call letters.

It could be worse. Some huge Top 40-era giants in major U.S. markets have had the plug pulled in the last few years: KQV-1410 Pittsburgh, and KCPX-1320 Salt Lake City. Though, the latest News is that both stations have found new owners who should have them back on the air in the next few months (KCPX is actually already on the air with low power, awaiting their FM Translator license).

I am thinking All Comedy. Bell already has access to all the promos, liners, etc. from the former "FUNNY 1410" CKSL in London, Ontario. Bell signed CKSL off the air in August 2016 due to the costs involved with upgrading the transmitting equipment. It wouldn't take much to bring "FUNNY 1410" to Vancouver, plus Bell would only need about half a phone booth.

How about a mix of oldies 60's and 70's music morning show 6:00 to 10:00 with a good morning drive team, then switch to several hard-hitting talk show hosts from 10:00 to 2:00 and 2:00 to 6:00 combined with a top notch news team and investigative reporting, then back to the 60's and 70's music 6:00 to midnight and midnight to 6:00 with live dj's. Give CKNW talk a good run for their money.

Aren't the CFUN calls deposited at 104.9 Sonic with Rogers right now? If so, all this talk of CFUN glory days is moot.

Actually Rogers has the CFUN calls are planted in Sechelt at 104.7 which is a 350 watt rebroadcaster for Mountain FM (CISQ) in Squamish. 104.9 in Vancouver has been CKKS since 2015.

It will be interesting to see what Bell does with 1410. Anything other than a third sports station in the market is a positive.

To recreate CFUN from either era of it's history would be expensive and pointless. Does the CFUN name and what it once was really mean anything in today's world?

It's been well over 30 years since CFUN bailed on Top 40 music. Almost 60 years since the original CFUN hit the airwaves.

If they were to bring back what CISL was, a mix of oldies and infomercials, they'd alomst be guaranteed a 3.0 share.

Being as Bell holds the rights to Coast To Coast, they could pull it from Roundhouse and people across much of BC might actually be able to hear the show again.

In an ideal world, having the budget to create a new full service station would be a dream come true, but we know that won't happen.

Having a starting point to build on could be a reality.

All comedy? I hope not. That's just a cheap, no overhead excuse to keep a transmitter running.

Comedy would be a non-starter. Both Funny 820 Hamilton & Funny 1060 Calgary are lucky to scrape a 1-share in their respective markets, so it would be a lateral move going from sports to comedy, all that effort to make a change with no real possibility for growth.

If you're not the dominant player doing talk or running a news wheel in the market, finding something financially viable for an AM signal is a challenge.

I really like Jim's idea above, of trying to recreate what CISL was doing, but you'd need live bodies behind the mic to make it listenable, and it's the cost of those live bodies that would make the accountants slowly shake their heads "no" when trying to balance the revenue/expense figures.

"All comedy? I hope not. That's just a cheap, no overhead excuse to keep a transmitter running."

Hahaha

Bell's already got one of those in Calgary.

Funny 1060 out here runs with not even close to the same signal that once pounded out across the west. Station engineer reportedly seems to be happy with the results. It sounds like an anemic amateur operation not the Voice of the Prairies.

Yup, so very Funny.

0.8 share and lower power bills sure must seem like good results to someone. You ain't winning any money making demo that matters with a 0.8 2+ audience rating.

Probably will come down to the same fools who decide to do the same thing or something else in Vancouver on 1410.
