Around Your Radio Dial
By DICK DIESPECKER [Province, March 7, 1953]
Everybody doubles in brass in most community radio stations, and Station
CFJC at Kamloops is no different from others in this respect.
From Manager Ian Clark, down to high school student Lorne Ulvelund, every member of the staff is expected to be able to do more than one job and do it well.
I was in Kamloops this week and dropped into the station to say “hello.”
Like private stations serving smaller communities elsewhere in Canada,
there is nothing pretentious about CFJC. A reception room, offices, two
studios, control room and music library make up the entire operation, but
it really doesn’t take any more for such a station to serve its community
and serve it well.
Ian Clark is not only station manager but also manager of the Kamloops
airport.
Walter Hardwood, big good-natured production manager, occasionally wrestles with a microphone, usually on newscasts.
Ralph Field is both announcer and continuity writer, while Emmett Cronin announces, operates and writes continuity.
Gordon Rye is an old-timer of 10 years service who operates and announces.
June Stein is a continuity writer who has her own program as well, a Birthday Party for the Children.
Pat Marini is a receptionist and continuity writer, also Ian’s secretary and runs a women’s program.
Lorne Ulvelund is a high school lad who heads the record library and also
does sport continuity writing.
And speaking of sport, this is one of the major activities of any station,
like CFJC. Right now it’s hockey playoff time and all Kamloops or the
surrounding countryside can think of is how the Elks are doing. They
thought so much of it on Wednesday night that CBC Wednesday Night’s
production of Carman was dropped from CFJC by special permission of the CBC. The hockey that replaced it was NOT as cultural perhaps, but the people of Kamloops appreciated it.
