Bas Jamieson, who hosted open-line radio shows for generations and became an institution in Newfoundland and Labrador broadcasting, has died. He was 85.

Jamieson died in St. John's on Wednesday evening.

Jamieson was a fixture on radio airwaves for decades, and was so well-known that one phrase — "Dat you, Bas?" — became synonymous with his career. It was a catchphrase in sketches that Greg Malone and Tommy Sexton performed on the WGB TV show.

Roger Jamieson, the owner of the Kilmory Resort in Swift Current, said his uncle found a long connection with audiences by being authentic.

"What you have to understand with Bas is [that] what he was on the air was what he was - that funny, gregarious, loving kind of guy. Large than life," said Jamieson, who produced his uncle's shows from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s.

Jamieson started his broadcasting career on the mainland, hosting shows in Ontario and British Columbia.

He returned to St. John's to work with CJON, the radio station managed by his family and later known as CJYQ.

Later in his career, he hosted various talk shows for VOCM.

Jamieson, who kept a sharp eye on politicians, briefly became one himself. He served one term on St. John's city council after being elected in 1990. He also briefly worked as a communications officer in the Newfoundland and Labrador government in the late 1980s.

Jamieson, though, made several return visits to the host's booth after a decision to retire at 71.

"His signature signoff, and the words he himself lived by, could not be more appropriate at this time," the family said in a statement.

"To give Bas the final word: 'Do something nice for somebody today, you'll feel better for it. Bye bye for now and God bless.' "

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
