Gary McGowan Memorial concert creates endowment fund

July 7, 2008

Edmonton-On June 13, 2008, friends, family and Edmonton's musical elite came together to remember and recognize the immense contribution Gary McGowan has made to Canada's musical community. The show at the Starlite Room, the concert venue Gary co-founded, raised $18,500 for the Gary McGowan Memorial Fund - a fund established to create an annual scholarship in the Arts & Cultural Management program at MacEwan.

The Government of Alberta's Access to the Future Fund will match all monies raised for The Gary McGowan Memorial Fund at the benefit concert, bringing the total amount of MacEwan's newest endowment to $37,000. The Gary McGowan Memorial Fund now creates an annual scholarship of $1,500 for students in the Arts & Cultural Management program at MacEwan who have a specific interest in the development, promotion and production of Canadian music.

Gary's passion for music has helped develop numerous local artists. At the benefit show, Shout Out Out Out Out, Bobby Cameron and other special guests donated their performances to Gary's Memorial Fund, and the Starlite Room donated the entire nights' proceeds.

"Gary has always known the power of music; he's lived it, loved it, promoted it, and been passionate about sharing it" said Charlee Redman, Gary's wife. "Braden (Gary's son) and I are honoured to know that Gary lives on in this connection with MacEwan students who share his passion and desires."

Gary was well known in Edmonton, having been the Program Director at K-97 during the stations' reign as the leading rock station in Canada. He had an extensive background in broadcasting, most recently having been instrumental in the awarding of numerous successful radio station licenses in Canada. Gary had a further hand in steering the direction of Canadian music with his involvement in ARIA - the Alberta Recording Industry Association, and FACTOR - The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings.
