Stu Daly CKLG

Stories and info about those no longer involved in the industry

Postby cart_machine » Wed Sep 06, 2006 10:38 pm

I was checking out Vancouver radio listings for July 11, 1962 and recognised all the names on the local stations (not including CBU) except Stu Daly, who was doing the 'Breakfast Bell' morning show at CKLG Monday-Saturday.

Does anyone know anything about him?

Don Cameron was a special kind of guy in a world that often celebrated bluster over brain.

He was kind, gentle and personable. I remember the day he entered the world of CKFM in Toronto, which was in a serious ratings battle with the pioneer FM station in the city, CHFI-FM. In the way that sports teams now actively recruit players, radio stations during the 1960s, and in particular FM stations wanting to make a mark, did much the same.

Don joined a stellar crew of on air personalities headed by Henry Shannon, who later became the voice of traffic in Toronto; Stu Daly, who defected for a successful career in Manhattan; Joe Van Poppel, who came to the station from Hamilton; Phil MacKellar, the voice of jazz in the city; Russ Thompson, known to millions of television viewers as the voice of General Motors; and Carl Banas, who later went on to television glory as Detective-Sergeant Byron James in the landmark series Wojeck.

Yeah, I saw that stuff. I was hoping someone here might have a first-person story about him.

Is he related to Calgary broadcaster Bart Daly?
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.
