With the line blurring between podcasting and traditional radio broadcasting, CBC is vaulting three of its original digital series onto CBC Radio this summer.

The public broadcaster is introducing 30-minute weekly shows on CBC Radio One based on its successful podcasts Someone Knows Something, Back Story and Campus.

Earlier, podcasts had structural and stylistic differences from a typical radio show. But, increasingly, the two formats are influencing each other.

"Podcasting is influencing what we're doing on the radio," such as presenting new voices and testing out innovative approaches, said Leslie Merklinger, CBC Radio's director of content development and production, programming.

The digital format has been a new frontier, allowing producers an open storytelling sandbox to play in. Podcasts have allowed creators to perhaps be more subtle, to explore a wider range of topics, tinker with sounds, tease out ideas or test boundaries concerning length.

"Audiences are increasingly looking for new, inventive forms of storytelling. Podcasting lends itself to experimentation, surprise, playing with format and a more intimate connection to audiences... It's like opening a book," Merklinger told CBC News.

While Someone Knows Something has drawn in the true-crime fanatics and armchair investigators in its probe of a Canadian cold case, Campus has been received well by post-secondary students for sharing intimate and honest stories from across the country, exploring topics as varied as on-campus rape to refugee resettlement.

Meanwhile, the new original podcast, Love Me, is delving into the "messiness of human connection." It comes from Mira Burt-Wintonick and Cristal Duhaime, two award-winning producers of earlier CBC Radio hit Wiretap.

Still, the intimate format also has its own requirements: for instance, the audience demands reliable delivery because, if a podcast becomes a hit, listeners tend to build their habits around it (for instance, listening while commuting or going out for a weekly run).

"You listen to a podcast in a different way than you hear something on the radio," Merklinger noted.

That said, turning a hit podcast into a radio show mostly requires editing the content down, sometimes adding in some additional content if the instalment runs short, and making sure serialized shows include enough of a recap for each episode, Merklinger said.

Overall, though, the initiative is about "connecting our radio audience with the fabulous work that we've shared as podcasts."

The new podcast-originating radio shows are part of a wider announcement about summer programming that includes Sleepover, the new program from former DNTO host Sook-Yin Lee.

This is a BIG DEAL. Finally, streaming media "believers" are seeing their day in the sun.
