Poll shows majority of Canadians disagree with Scheer on CBC

Canada's Conservatives face an uphill battle in the 2019 federal election if their newly-minted leader, Andrew Scheer, uploads his recent anti-CBC rhetoric into his party platform, new research has revealed.

Regardless of their political stripes, more than 80 per cent of Canadians support either an increase in funding or maintained funding for the public broadcaster, according to a poll conducted by Nanos Research and commissioned by Friends of Canadian Broadcasting. The poll results indicate that most Canadians disagree with Scheer, who suggested during the recent Tory leadership race that he would cut funding to the CBC and axe its news division altogether.

The research also found that broadly-speaking, Canadians are concerned about the decline in the quality and quantity of journalism in Canada, and more than half think the federal government should take steps to address it.

The poll surveyed 1,000 Canadians at random and asked them about their trust in various news sources and opinions of the CBC. Forty-three per cent said they support increased funding for the CBC's operations, 39 per cent supported a steady level of funding, and only 14 per cent supported a decrease in funding.

Canadian taxpayers provide about $1 billion in annual funding to the CBC every year.

Not sure if we have a Canadian example of 'fake news' here but if you look at the website of Friends of Canadian Broadcasting which is the group that paid for the poll it says:

'From time to time, we involve our supporters in non-partisan campaigns to fight for a strong CBC and the presence of Canadian content on radio and television.

Polling companies nowadays have a huge databank of how respondents reacted to previous polls so if they want to satisfy the party paying for the poll 90 seconds spent on some database filtering will usually get a company the results they want. The survey results showing people trust what they hear on the radio more than TV, newspapers or online news is a bit over the top. As much as the state of journalism is at a low ebb in Canada (especially in broadcasting) I really don't see the CBC as a beacon of fair reporting but on the contrary, an agenda driven organisation with DNA usually left of centre not really providing much balance and most Canadians don't expect it. People right of centre accept it and don't even tune in and people left of centre will tune it and accept it as their daily talking points.

What are the odds that the pro-CBC Friends of Canadian Broadcasting rigged the poll to their favor (because from what I've seen elsewhere, most Canadians actually want the CBC privatized)? If I were Prime Minister, that's exactly what I'd do, privatize the CBC and let them sink or swim on their own without taxpayer help (Liberal, NDP and Green opinions about privatization be damned).
