Larry Mellott semi retires from CJOY Guelph

Postby paterson » Sat Jun 29, 2019 10:07 am

Long time Guelph area broadcaster Larry Mellott finished his last afternoon 2-6pm airshift Friday at Guelph's 1460 CJOY. Larry had been afternoon drive at the station for over 30 years. He will continue to be the voice of the OHA Guelph Storm which CJOY broadcasts.

Larry began his career almost 50 years ago at CHLO St. Thomas and also worked in a few markets in Western Canada. He originally got into radio to be a play by play hockey announcer. Eventually ending up in Guelph 1974 he did his first hockey broadcast as colour commentator with long time Guelph broadcaster (and mayor of the city) Norm Jary.

Larry says he would like to continue with the hockey broadcasts until the Storm win the Memorial Cup! Happy semi retirement Larry!!

Although CJOY is hampered by a somewhat weak signal, small coverage area and tons of out of town competition, the station manages to survive still playing the hits of the 70's to 90's. CJOY years ago applied twice to the CRTC to move to the FM band but were denied on both occasions. Sister station is Magic 106 which has an AC/Hot AC format. Both are owned by Corus.

CJOY is also interesting that they had a history of keeping many staff long term- Gord Field, Jimmie Rogers, Norm Jary, Wayne Moore, Marilyn Kane and Larry Mellott were voices heard for decades in the Royal City. My understanding is that a few of the sales staff have been with the company since the 70's and one rep was actually still selling in his 80's, up until earlier this year. :towel:
