Thanks for allowing me in

Postby SteveLegault » Fri May 03, 2013 1:23 pm

I worked in several different markets, in both radio and t.v. from the late 70's thru the mid 90's.

I started out at CJDV in Drumheller in about '78 or so, John Eno was the morning guy. I did some jock shifts there, but mostly news and continued on in news from there on in......

Went to CHAB in Moose Jaw after that for a short while. Norman Jack was the N.D. at the time and Bob Price was also a news reader there.

Then I went back to my hometown (Calgary) and was hired by Ron Wood (N.D.) and Hal Gardner. I kinda got lucky there and landed the traffic job up in the Cessna 150, after Myke Thomas decided he wanted to do strictly promotions. Robbie Campbell was also reading news there at the time.

From there, went to CFAC 2&7 and went from the old house down near Elbow Drive to the brand new building which was opened I think in mid-81. Ted Arnold was the N.D. and newsreaders included Deb Lamb, Larry Day and Steve Abrams. I was hired as a reporter. Ed was doing the sports along with Jim Van Horne.

From there, went to CKRD in Red Deer for my first N.D. job....did morning news on radio and supper television news. Left there after six years to take on the ND job at Izzy's new digs in Saskatoon and stayed there until about '91.

Went to Winnipeg after that when Global expanded and opened bureaus across Canada.

Wont say why I left the biz but decided to go back to school and worked at 1290, doing news on the morning show while I went to University.

That's sort of a thumbnail of my involvement. It is sure nice to see a few familiar names bandied about. I have no desire to go back but enjoy the memories.

Thanks again all for approving me

Welcome to the board. I remember watching you, Ron MacLean, the late Michelle Murphy (and Shelley Fine?) on CKRD-TV's Newscene. Even remember listening to your CKRD Radio "Weekday" talk show.

LOL...how shameful that "Weekday" show was. I hope there aren't any airchecks of it around. It had zero budget, was NOT something I wanted to do, was NOT something I was any good at. I hated it.

On the other hand, enjoyed working with Ron and the rest.

Thanks for the welcome tho

Were you working at the same time albertaboy4life?

I sure had fond memories of those days, especially Calgary and Red Deer. Doing the traffic reports with Norm Edwards in the morning and Jim Jackson in the afternoons, at least on the CKXL side, and with Doug Gossen and Wayne (last name escapes me now, but he was the PD on FM)

I was sure sorry to hear of so many passing away.....Norm, Greg, Michelle Murphy, Anna Geddes, Lorne Starko.

It's so sad.

Nope, I was just a young listener and viewer.

Also, I think Wayne Bryant, CHFM's one-time PD, is the name you're looking for.

Here's another memory for you - I think you covered a big fire in downtown Red Deer. I can't quite remember what it was that burned down though - grain elevator? CBC TV Calgary picked up your report.

Yep, that's it....Wayne Bryant....and Doug worked with a really great lady named Linda, but can't remember her last name either. I also hear Wayne passed away

I never hear much about the guys at XL....I know Norm passed, as I was still in the business at the time. But would love to find out more about Dr. Dan (Gavin) and a few others like Jim Davies and Ron Wood. Wonder if Bill Powers still has his beer fridge...lol

There were a few things that got picked up by CBC, as CKRD was an affiliate in those days......Certainly could have been anything, not sure.

One thing I do remember is my first contribution to the B.N. voice service when I was in Moose Jaw...LOL...was thrilled to my eyeballs....a story about a natural gas explosion leveling a house.

I was young and so loved doing what I did in those days, but it evolved into something that wasn't fun anymore. I guess we all move on in life.

You in the biz now?

Linda Hart? Now my memory is failing me.

Nope, just a life-long fan of radio/tv.

Ya know, I think you're right.....Linda was a really sweet lady and we shared the same birthday

Wow, I'm very impressed and very flattered that I'm remembered at all, has been a very long time since I sat in front of a mike

Thanks, you've made my day :occasion5:

Welcome aboard Steve. Nice to see a bunch of familiar names mentioned.

I talked to Dr Dan last week when he was in Vancouver. He's still at QR-77 where he's been since leaving XL in '86.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Steve. I remember you and all those personalities, as well.
We even used to talk and socialise with each other. Indeed, I wondered if the Rideau Road TV facility had ghosts.
Going head-to-head with 'XL when I was at CFCN and later during my stint with 66-CFR were jolly times.
Glad you're on the board - RTR
