RadioWest.ca's New Look

RadioWest.ca's New Look

Postby jon » Sun Jan 18, 2009 9:07 am

You are looking at a new version of RadioWest.ca's discussion forum software. The move was made because Support had ended for the previous version on January 1st.

Other than a new look, there are new features that should reduce its predecessor's sometimes sluggish behaviour. The only major change in functionality is that HTML is no longer allowed in Posts, but there are BBCodes for most common formatting and linking needs. HTML uses curved brackets <> and BBCodes uses square brackets [].

Let us know what you think.

Starting to look good

new logo??

please get rid of jack rant and pleghm machine

please provide view most recent posts at bottom as well as
often you are down that low and want to return but you have
to scroll up

how about a section for cart_machine and his old newspaper clippings etc

I would love a section for operators and others new to the business being able
to talk to their peer group without interference from the old farts club

or the bitter old fuckers

Other than that you might want to explain the diffences in the two boards

Another board I'm on switched to the same version of the software (a third still has the old one). It a bit of getting used to because not everything's in the same place.

The only problem I have is it was easier for me to tell in the old version which threads have posts I haven't read. I'm presuming the thin red lines on the left indicates it but the colour is so faded (at least on my screen), I can't tell what colour is it at a glance. The other board (mentioned above) has an option in board preferences in the user control panel to change the board style from prosilver to subsilver2, which I prefer, as it changes the icon and makes it easier for me to tell where the unread posts are.

I gather the banner's still under construction. Good luck.

The reddish colour in the icon on the left indicates a new post "to you"

I actually use the "view most recent posts" most and go down the list

If you have been away for a bit - there will be a lot of reddish coloured icons on the left

I wonder if every monitor and every eye sees some colour differently - this is clear as a bell to me

Might be interesting to see the differnt colour jon - just as an experiment

The board seems to bit more flexible and funny (appealing to the child in me)

I also assume some new flashing lights will be on the top banner

Works in progress are always fun and sharing ideas good as well

Now how about a spell checker on each reply window/or new thread window

So cArtie's got a monitor that has colours other than gray and green?

There are hundreds of themes available for phpbb. You should seriously consider finding a nicer one that this default one. Just a suggestion.

What did I just say?

" I'm presuming the thin red lines on the left indicates it but the colour is so faded (at least on my screen), I can't tell what colour is it at a glance. "

Another board which uses the newest phpBB software allows the user to change their board preferences. One of things that results is the board shows an icon instead of some thin lines. That seems to work just fine.

There's a problem with that. It doesn't show all the "most recent posts." It only shows the last post in a thread. So there can be three new posts in a thread but if I go to "view most recent posts" it only shows one.

Anyway, generally the new layout is fine, and I appreciate the time spent setting it up.

We have one. It's called "Mike Cleaver."

Themes

Postby jon » Sun Jan 18, 2009 2:15 pm

I, too, was pleased to see all the available Themes for Version 3 of phpBB, which is the new version we just installed this morning.

Unfortunately, I discovered that many MODs (modifications to the original software, provided by others -- not the currently developers of phpBB) only work for the default Theme (prosilver). Unfortunately, that includes the MOD that displays the Topic in the LAST POST column on the forum's "front page". My concern is that "half a MOD" (the non-theme-specific pieces) will likely create an ugly mess on your screen were you to choose a Theme where the MOD lacked theme-specific pieces.

The subject is certainly open to discussion, but I think it boils down to a choice of (1) removing all MODs; or (2) choosing one Theme for everyone.

I will try and address the other items mentioned as I have time -- it's been a busy day!

Another feature of the new board is your birthday .. You can update your profile and now add your birthday to it. No free cake, no present, but you will get the honour of having your name and age displayed on the front page on your big day.

:occasion4: I have a feeling Top Dog will be the first on the birthday list!

Are there possibly enough numerals to properly list his age?

cArtie

P.S. TD, let me be the first to give you an early birthday present. Just pull out your favourite video. :ky:
