Bits and Pieces of BC Radio History

Did Doris Swan of Kelliher, Sask. climb up the ladder to success, as Arthur Godfrey used to put it? It doesn't appear so. But she got her shot on a CBC show on this date 70 years ago. It was a Sunday. James Milligan of Halifax, who appeared on the same programme, did a little better. https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/ ... lligan-emc

Back then, jocks worked six-day weeks. I don't know when that stopped; in the '60s, I guess. You can see the recommended evening local jock shows by Dick Diespecker in his Province column.

Note the performance of “The Plague,” which seems appropriate for today.

I’m puzzled by the five-minute gaps between some of the programmes on KING, the only TV station viewable in Vancouver at the time. Did they run spots? Test patterns? A slide with the call-letters? Maybe they needed the five minutes to change kinescopes.

Pardon any OCR errors. Diespecker seems to be missing some commas.

WEEKEND SHOWS

The usual line-up of big shows for the weekend on all networks and stations. I still think they overdo it on weekends. The traffic is too heavy ... there is just too darn much entertainment, information, culture, comedy, music, drama and a heap too much talking from Sunday morning to Sunday night. If you could listen to all of it and did so, you would be a battered and gibbering wreck by midnight.
Well, anyway, here are some of the headline shows for the weekend. If you are sports-minded, you can find a football game on almost any Seattle station on Saturday afternoon. If you feel like a serious hour, you can listen to Town Meeting in Canada over CJOR tonight at 9. If you're in a dancing mood, you'll find everything from smooth pops to dixieland to barn dancing around the local stations sometime during the eve later in the evening, I recommend DJ's Vic Waters on CJOR and Jack Cullen on CKNW or Bill Ward's Dog House on CKWX.
Tomorrow, there is always the New York Philharmonic at noon over CBR. Efrem Kurtz will play the Dvorak Cello Concerto.
At 5 over CBC Trans-Canada and CBR, Startime will have as guests violinist Hyman Goodman and the Bill Brady Sextet.
At the same time over CBC Dominion and CJOR, Vancouver's Alan Young, now a glittering CBS television star, will guest on the Bergen-McCarthy show.
At 5:30, Theatre Guild on the Air over KOMO will present Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Frederic March will re-create his academy award role for the air show.
Singing Stars of Tomorrow, heard over CJOR at 6 will have as contestants this week Doris Swan from Kelliher, Saskatchewan and James Milligan from Halifax.
The Leslie Bell Singers and Howard Cable's orchestra are still top of the popularity parade, as judged by Canada's rating experts, Elliott Haynes. Tomorrow they will offer as a special, Animal Crackers, a group of traditional folk songs suggested to Dr. Bell by Burl Ives on his last visit to Toronto.
Stage 51 at 8 will offer The Plague a novel by Albert Camus and adapted for radio by Len Peterson. Setting is a city ravaged by a deadly plague, its population quarantined from the rest of the world.
