Thank you to YouTube's Gary Kasmar for this week's aircheck featuring Daryl "B" (Burlingham) on Music Radio 14 C-FUN, Vancouver. The jingles are from a Joseph P. Cuff package also used, at the time, by 1050 CHUM Toronto.

Thanks ABFL. Darryl B. was an inspiration to many.

Mr. Kasmar and I crossed paths far more years ago than I'd care to remember.

Daryl B was always easy to listen to. He didn't do "bits" but funny throw away one liners, often self deprecating material about himself or another jock. He worked at many of Canada's best top 40 stations- CFUN, CKLG in Vancouver, CFQC Saskatoon, CKRC, CKY Winnipeg, CHUM Toronto and CKLW in Windsor.

On air Daryl would sometimes extro into commercials with a line something like "this is Daryl B. takin care of business on (call letter)." Randy Bachman and Daryl were friends and Randy reportedly thought this was a good line for a song. BTO had their big mid 70's hit with the same name. Don't know if Daryl B. was ever given any writing credits for the song but Randy has given him recognition verbally in interviews.

Daryl was a complex, talented and very kind and loving friend.

I knew Daryl for many years. We competed while I was at CFTR and he was at CHUM, after we had worked together, at CFUN. In 1978, Daryl was CFUN's PD and he hired me, to come 'home'.

Can you imagine this amazing fellow on PM drive and Fred Latremouille, in the Morning slot....? We topped out at a 567,000 cume - when we finally beat CKLG.

Daryl was a CKLG stalwart in the 60's.

Enjoy - and "stay outa' trees".

**His best friend was Burton Cummings.

A long time fan of Daryl, I first heard him on Winnipeg Top 40 radio in the mid-60s when visiting relatives. I finally met him in my music-journalist days. We encountered each other a couple of times during the brief heyday of Casino Records.

Ray Pettinger, an ex-Winnipeg drummer turned West Coast record promotion rep, had created Casino after buying Terry Jacks' interest in their Goldfish Records venture. Goldfish artists Susan Jacks and Chilliwack were then under the umbrella of renamed Casino which set about expanding the roster. Among the signings was Shakedown. Band leader Richard Stepp had previously been in The Northwest Company. And that late '60s group was produced and advised by Daryl. So 'B' was similarly present to help Richard make headway with Shakedown.

Daryl was invariably polite but struck me as a deeply reflective person, keeping his own counsel. Years later, I heard he had health issues, including surviving polio as a child. I don't know if that was true. But my wife had childhood polio. She, too, can be very inward focussed. In her case, that's because the disease's after effects are never truly gone. The constant wear and tear on overcompensating 'healthy' muscles and nerves usually causes post-polio pain and mobility challenges.

I do think the Merriam-Webster dictionary could put photos of Daryl and Rick Honey beside the definition of "friendship.' I know that Rick, despite his own cancer battles, helped out Daryl. Eerie but also deeply touching that they passed within a couple of days of each other.

Finally, by inspiring Randy Bachman to write Taking Care Of Business, Daryl had a degree of separation to Elvis Presley! That's because The King so loved the song's title, that he used the acronym TCOB to fashion a series of belt buckles and other fashion paraphernalia with that logo.

I had only met Rick Honey in chance meetings..never Darryl..heard of Darryl passing close to same time of Rick..after Rick; I believe he may have had profound sadness at losing friend Rick, and this Darryl passed. Sometimes our connection with someone is truly deeper than understood by many.

Daryl fell apart, when Rick died. I got a phone call....it was about 6 PM...it was Rick Honey, and he asked me to sit in for him, the next morning, on 600 am.

He died 2 days later. When Daryl heard, he got very upset.

So sad - that then we lost "B".

I hope you met either of them. Larger than life - Rick Honey was one of the best Emcees in the world, and Daryl, a superb announcer. Both very nice to me....and I feel blessed to have had time with them both.

Friends? Heck many of my staff friends from CFUN, CFTR, CFRA and CFAX are still close.

I love many of my co-workers.

We all LOVED working with these guys.

How kind.

Do you have any idea what that means to an old jock like me?

Everything.

I was blessed, and loved my friends at the Stations I worked with...some have become like Family, and I am so happy that you got some joy too....that's what I loved to do....we all did...TRY and make your listeners day, better.

You made mine.

Gracias.
