The War Of The Worlds

A radio site without audio is like a TV station with no pictures.

Strange thing about the success of the Orson Welles Halloween story ...

By the time of the famous broadcast... the H.G. Wells book it was based on was already 40 years old.

It says something about how many people had actually taken the time to read the book during those four decades prior to the 1938 broadcast...

Just watched it through to the closing credits. Casey Kasem is listed as one of the Mercury Players.

SiriusXM channel 82 "Radio Classics" will rebroadcast "The War of The Worlds" and the radio documentary "War Of The Welles" (from Southern California Public Radio) at 9pm PDT Saturday evening.

Both the radio documentary and the PBS Telecast brought to light once again how successfully Welles' theatre group caught the attention of the radio audience.

This was and still is great theatre of the mind.

Was the success of that radio episode due to the skill Orson Welle's presentation in 1938...

... or due to the brilliance of H.G. Well's writing skills forty years earlier in 1898?

"With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us."

Greetings,
Yes War Of The Worlds is probably one of the best all-time radio dramas, just classic and really made impact with listeners. Who sez Radio cannot reach people and reach them well. Makes a good case for selling radio airtime and convincing sponsors that Radio Does Sell if done well!

Take care everyone,

"Actual" location? Little Green Men landed? "Largely" fictional?

Yikes.

Mebbe a qualification as an imaginary setting for a work of fiction might be in order.

Why does everything in this world have to be Americanized to suit a U.S. audience?

The scene of the Martian landing in the original H.G. Wells book from 1898 was at Horsell Common in Surrey, England.

I suspect that if a European broadcaster had dramatized "The War Of The Worlds" a location some place on that continent would have been chosen. By the same token If the CBC had produced the program We might have had martian craft landing in Ontario's cottage country or the Ottawa Valley. Or close to Alderglove.

I have heard OTR versions of "Gunsmoke" produced in Australia. The program had Matt Dillon "State marshal" not "United States Marshal", and locations identifiable to that nation. So it dose happen.
