Monday, It's TSN 1260 for CFRN-AM

Postby jon » Fri Sep 27, 2013 11:16 am

If you missed it on air, here is the terribly, overly, drawn out announcement on the Post Show video:

CFRN-1260 becomes TSN 1260 on Monday. They have been All Sports since switching from Oldies a dozen years ago, but the inevitable rebranding, now that Bell owns them, happens on Monday.

If it's so inevitable under Bell ownership, why has the Team in Vancouver not switched yet?

I'd say the Team name is too well established in Vancouver to change it, especially with Canucks etc. And the station gets numbers, often beating several music FM's.

I could see 1410 going to TSN 1410, but not 1040.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Earlier this year, Bell announced its plan to convert the remaining Team outlets to the TSN brand sometime this Fall. I'm hearing this will happen within a couple of weeks, with one source saying "a matter of days."

Looks like everyone missed this in Cam Tait's Journal Sports column a day or two ago:

Looks like Team 1260 will become TSN Radio

The winds of change could very well be in the air, especially around the Team 1260’s studios.

We’re hearing the all-sports station will be flipped to TSN Radio, perhaps as soon as early next week. Bell Media — which owns TSN — recently bought Astral Media, which included the Team 1260. The TSN branding was imminent.

And that leaves some very interesting questions, especially with the Edmonton Oilers and 630 CHED. The current radio deal between the Oilers and CHED is up at the end of the upcoming 2013-14 NHL season.

TSN televises NHL games and provides a national perspective. So why not package them both and tie them up in a bow with a microphone cord?

I hope there will not be any job casualties, but new owners have that right.

Host Mark Spector’s last show on the Team is Friday, we hear. Spector, who has had the 12-2 p.m. time slot, works for Sportsnet, TSN’s main competitor.

Spector has not been fired by The Team. In fact. they want to keep him.

So could TSN be calling him?

Stay tuned.

Radiofan, my money's on TSN Radio for 1040. Changing from Team to TSN wouldn't be such a shock. TSN has a solid background on the TV side....I doubt it would cause any confusion. I'm actually surprised Vancouver still has 1040 AND 1410, but when one considers the conflicts in broadcasting hockey, football and soccer, then it does make sense to have the two in the same house.

I don't see Rogers Sportsnet allowing Don Taylor to work for a radio station branded TSN.

Working for two companies that oppose each other? I could never believe it was allowed from the beginning. While its not illegal, it wouldn't be classed as ethical in my book.

Doing work, when not an employee, for two competing companies seems almost common place these days. In Radio and in other fields.

Frank Torres' fixed wing aerial traffic service certainly does that, for example. I don't believe that the announcers are always kept separate.

It's another way of circumventing what used to be, having a staff. Having a person on the payroll or on the books, to do a job, while working for the opposition, takes that job away from someone who could be working full-time for that company. I guess what I'm pushing here, is an ongoing objection to those who moonlight. No wonder stations like Team 1040, Sportsnet & TSN sound as though they have a cast of thousands. Exaggeration? Yes, it just sounds that way.
