Spruce Grove Chamber of Commerce
News Release
Radio Coming to Spruce Grove
March 13, 2014

The chamber supports an application to CRTC on behalf of Golden West Broadcasting to bring a radio station to the City of Spruce Grove. The chamber and the city have been working together on this application for the past 18 months. A secondary application has delayed the CRTC review of the first application of Golden West Broadcasting until the secondary application has been looked at by the CRTC.

We initially engaged Golden West Broadcasting because of their 50 year + history in radio. The first station - CFAM - was designed to provide LOCAL SERVICE in all aspects of community life, news, sports, weather, farm and business information. Time for the inspirational aspect of the community was also incorporated into the fabric of the station's service and that basic premise continues to this day. Golden West Broadcasting currently serves 28 communities across the country with demographic the same or similar to our region.

A radio station is a "game changer" for our region. The City of Spruce Grove is a retail commercial hub serving the city and surrounding area and currently, we seek media solutions for our advertising outside of our marketing area. Golden West Broadcasting marketing focuses their programming, marketing and sales efforts to the region they are licenses to serve. A radio station that we could call our own, that would focus on news and events in our community, is just what the community needs. We require our own voice and the chamber is excited to have a local, community based radio station. The ability for our businesses to have a local daily venue to advertise and promote would be great. Additional benefits of having a radio station in the community would not only greatly enhance the ability to advertise but would also promote safety messages on an ongoing basis to enhance public safety and education and the ability to connect with "non-residents" who may be working in the area and not aware of our community focus.

The initial application to the CRTC by Golden West Broadcasting garnered letters of support from The City of Spruce Grove, The Spruce Grove & District Chamber of Commerce, The Town of Stony Plain, Parkland School Division No. 70, Acheson Business Association, numerous businesses in the region, both retail and corporate and the chamber remains confident that the application will be approved and hopefully within the next year.

If you support this application you can phone the chamber office and administration can inform you how you may be of further assistance in moving the application along for approvals. Call (780) 962-2561 for more information.

One radio frequency in Stony Plain and Spruce Grove may sooner than later be sounding country music and local news to those with an open ear.

Mark Tamagi, president of Blackgold Broadcasting Ltd., made a presentation to Stony Plain business owners during a Stony Plain and District Chamber of Commerce general meeting on March 19, describing the potential for a local radio station in the tri-area.

Blackgold Broadcasting and a competitive corporation, Golden West Broadcasting are in competition for the one local radio station up for grabs, Tamagi said.

“If we are awarded this licence, we will be planting our roots in Stony Plain,” Tamagi said. “Our studios will be in Stony Plain and our transmitter site will be just outside of Stony Plain.”

Golden West Broadcasting was not available for comment as of press time.

The steps to see a radio station operational are two-fold, he explained.

First, an application to the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for the programming of the radio station must be submitted. Then, a second application must be made to Industry Canada for the frequency broadcast that program.

Some progress has been made as the frequency has been identified as 88.1. However, the process has been stalled as a hearing before the CRTC in Toronto has been scheduled for May 13.

“You’re going to get a radio station in this area. That’s guaranteed. (The hearing) just determines what company is going to be the licence holder for that station.”

A decision will not likely be reached until September 2014.

Currently, Black Gold owns the only station in Leduc. And Golden West owns the only station in Fort Saskatchewan.

All four communities, Leduc, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain, are semi-bedroom communities to Edmonton. But all have nearby industrial areas outside the City of Edmonton, such as Nisku, Acheson and the Industrial Heartland in and near Fort Saskatchewan, that provide a significant percentage of local employment.
