Completely different situation which does not relate to AMP Calgary. The CRTC allows the use of montages in Quebec for up to (but no more than) 10% of a station's total broadcast week. NRJ Ottawa & CKOI Montreal got nailed a few years ago by using montages for nearly 20% of the week, which the CRTC saw as a way of circumventing the 65% French Language content requirements.

Yes, I understand that. And the English stations use it to do the same for non-hit.

The similarity is that both come down to riding the rules right to the line. In the montages case, even the stations that keep it to under 10% of the broadcast week are following the letter of the act, but not the spirit. It's clearly a way of spending less total time playing French music or non-hit. In the AMP case, it is in the spirit of the act, (Cancon gets the same share) but very clearly against the letter. Yes, it's a technicality, but if you've ever programmed under a specialty license, non-hit, or any pre 90s FM really, you know the CRTC can be nit-picky about technicalities.

Yes, the CRTC often reminds me of the story told by the DJ about having his hour-long aircheck tape reviewed by his PD. They are sitting together in a room listening to the tape and the PD is getting more and more angry with him. Because the DJ (on the tape) keeps making the same mistake the PD first mentioned during the early minutes of the tape as they listen together.

Stations really do risk having the CRTC tell them they are doing something wrong, then punishing them quite severely based on evidence of repeated incidents that occurred before the station received notice from the CRTC.

Flirting with the boundaries of CRTC regulations can be quite a dangerous exercise now that the CRTC has put policies in place to deal much more severely with offenders.

Stepping back for a second, and freely admitting that I haven't actually listened to this station, I have to ask if anyone seriously believes that this is anything more than "Stunting". Especially given that the last use of this format in Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest was just a Teaser to insert a time gap into a Format Change.

They are getting their music from these folks, right? QuickHitz

All of which begs the question: what happens when they finish Stunting?

To quote Johnny Fever (WKRP): "I had been hoping for an All Hawaiian Format."

There's no way this is stunting.

Newcap have fully bought in to this concept.

If it were stunting, they'd be drawing a lot of attention to how short the songs are, rather than just "more music."

Stunting worked better when there were fewer stations, and the general public were paying more attention.

This is glaring evidence of a station and a company that has run out of gas, gumption and ideas.
Guess they couldn't connect with "the brightest programming minds in the world".
