RadioWest.ca Exclusive: CFCW Moves to 840 Next Summer

Postby jon » Fri Dec 05, 2014 5:10 pm

I just stopped by Newcap in West Edmonton Mall earlier this afternoon, and picked up a small piece celebrating CFCW's 60th anniversary. The "CFCW Historical Timeline" inside goes not just to the past, but also a little bit into the future:
2015 CFCW will be moving to 840 on the dial in the summer. This change will restore night time coverage to listeners in north-central Alberta, which has been reduced by noise and interference over time. Stay tuned for the BIG switch!

Greetings,
Thanks for mentioning this Jon, much appreciated! Was wondering if they were ever going to move from 790 to 840. Now we know.

Western DXers should be aware that this will make it even more challenging to hear WHAS Louisville. Get it while ya can!

These days 840 is like a graveyard frequency, being a sea of weak stations: CKBX 100 Mile House, KMAX Colfax WA, KKNX Eugene OR, KSWB Seaside OR, KXNT North Las Vegas, and a faint WHAS. I hope CFCW isn't trading one set of night-time problems for another.

My previous comments about CFCW being the most listened to music-based AM station in Canada seem no longer to be true. No, I don't mean CISL, which has made similar claims from time to time.

A look at the last Toronto ratings indicates that CFZM-740 Toronto, Zoomer Radio, given the size of the market, would have more listeners with their 3.3 SHARE than CFCW would have with their 5.7 Edmonton SHARE, even after adding in their large rural listenership.

Here is the current CFZM schedule: http://www.zoomerradio.ca/schedule/

They're running promos on the morning show at 8:40 AM and Pete Hicks is mentioning it now during mid days.

From the CFCW website:

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.
