What's Going on at KOOL-FM? MIA: Tarzan Dan

Postby jon » Wed Aug 05, 2015 4:58 pm

Just noticed the KOOL-FM Calgary web site: http://1015kool.fm/

Saw a familiar face doing Morning: Michelle Yi.

So, what happened to Tarzan Dan?

From Dan's FB page:

Left Job at 101.5 Kool FM
Yesterday

Hmmmm ... will Pattison flip KOOL FM to BIG-FM (they have BIG 105 in Red Deer already).
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

I don't know if it was posted elsewhere but the peak Calgary morning show has changed recently as well. Danny kid is morning show now then Taylor Daniels middays and Ashley Hinton is afternoon drive. I am pretty sure that changed this week as well. Maybe Jimmy p is regretting launching in Calgary.

It's time for "Today's Hot Country" 101.5 JRfm Calgary.

The license commitments for the Peak are likely too fresh for a format flip, just yet, at 95.3.

I am thinking Calgary is going to see a few changes on the dial soon. Something is going to go down at Kool. And I believe q107 is going to get bigger

I agree. Something might be up with Jack too. Only time will tell

Pattison has done well with Country in many markets.

With the right on-air lineup in Calgary, they could supply 6PM to 6AM major market programming to Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, North Battleford and any other small market country stations in the chain.

As for the BIG rumors that have been swirling around the past few weeks, I'm thinking Q-107 will rebrand as 107 BIG FM much like sister station 975 BIG FM in Winnipeg.

There should be numerous changes on the Calgary radio dial before Labour Day.

Brad Dryden (Ex-morning man at CI00 Halifax) is reporting on his Facebook this morning that he is the new morning man at Kool 101.5 with co-host Michelle Yi. Brad previously was in Calgary on CJAY 92 during the late '90s.

Remember listening to the "Bradley Dryden Show" on C-JAY before he headed to K-97 in Edmonton.

He started at C-JAY around Stampede time and seemed to really enjoy saying "Hhhhhhot Tub" and "Hot-lanta"

A whole lotta talent exiting the Calgary airwaves over the last few weeks...

Matt & Eric at Jack...gone.
Tarzan Dan at Kool FM...gone.
Lexine Stephens and Zenon West at Q107...gone.

I'm with everyone else...I suspect there's some changes coming to the YYC market.

I don't necessarily see Kool going anywhere...they're actually starting to make some gains.

As for Jack FM, they've slid big-time over the last 12 months; in the Spring 2014 PPM's, they were #3 with Adults 25-54. Spring 2015? They were #10.

Rogers does country in a few other markets, right?

Something odd happened to Rogers Calgary in the last book. Never mind year-to-year, but CHFM and JACK slid right off the map within 6 months. It's not the kind of book you react to like that. I suspect the writing was on the wall for M&E anyway.

With all this noise about Voltair corrupting the PPM results, hard to know what to believe.

Is that your opinion ? As previously mentioned on the other site (to the point of ad nauseum?), one market where country failed notoriously for Pattison was in Kelowna.

It could have done, very well, However, someone at Pattison pulled the plug on country music, prematurely, after only two years on the air? Was it Leo Baggio or Bob Mills. Nobody will say for sure.

Obviously, it took a David Larson calibre programmer to get country music to work in this area.

After 30 years of trying to make country work in this town, Newcap finally pulled it off !

Country 100.7 does very well to this day and for a while, they were the number one station.

The key to making country work is to get a name brand morning person. Casey Clarke fits the bill in all aspects.

You want good talent ? Then, shell out the bucks !

However, Pattison is notorious for "el cheapo" when it comes to radio talent.

The McDonald's model is, in fact, how Jimmy Pattison made his billions in the first place.
