CRTC: CRUZ-FM Edmonton and Dhillon's Wetaskiwin License

Postby jon » Mon Aug 17, 2015 8:26 am

This week, the CRTC is planning to announce its decision on license renewals for CKEA-FM Edmonton (CRUZ) and CIHS-FM Wetaskiwin, both of which have asked for relief from specific types of music requirements in their licenses.

CIHS-FM's owner recently lost his licenses for CFSI-FM's two transmitters on Salt Spring Island, because of license infractions. At the same CRTC hearing, he was also cited for continuing license infractions at CIHS-FM, over a much longer period of time.

This morning, CIHS-FM Wetaskiwin was given a two year license renewal by the CRTC, with seven mandatory orders that, as I understand it, allow the license to be quickly suspended prior to the end of the two year period if not followed. The request for relief from musical format requirements was denied.

One (former sister station) CFSI-FM former staff member had intervened, recommending that the license renewal be denied.

CKEA-FM Edmonton (CRUZ) was granted a full seven year license renewal term, but was cited for failing to comply with the musical format requirements of their license, with two penalties:
  1. A small fine; and
  2. No consideration by the CRTC of the station's request to remove the musical format requirement.
