Most sports fans probably would have expected Mayor Don Iveson to get up Wednesday morning and declare it Connor McDavid Day in Edmonton.

But he didn’t.

At 7 a.m. the mayor read a different proclamation:

“Whereas in 1953 Bryan Hall signed on to the airwaves for the first time, launching an unparalleled career in Edmonton broadcasting…

“And whereas for the past 65 years, Hallsy has become one of our city’s most well-known and treasured voices in bringing football and hockey games to life for countless Edmontonians…

“And whereas his voice continues to resonate today as a mainstay on many of the radio programs and advertisements…

“And whereas Bryan has been a longtime champion of all things Edmonton, inspiring many generations of sports fans to cheer loud and be proud of the city, therefore, I, Don Iveson, do hereby proclaim Oct. 17, 2018, Bryan Hall Day in Edmonton, Alberta.”

There was a function at 9 a.m. in the 630 CHED studios when Bryan Hall got off the air after his morning sports run that began at 6 a.m. in which he was presented with a cake featuring his likeness in icing.

And then they sent the 85-year-old sportscaster who will cover his 61st Grey Cup here in November, off to the Edmonton Broadcasters Club’s annual fall luncheon to be honoured for his 65th anniversary behind the microphone in the City of Champions.

Marty Forbes began the proceedings in front of many of the legendary names in local broadcasting and the likes of Hockey Hall of Fame “Mr. Goalie” Glenn Hall who started his pro career here with the Edmonton Flyers when the louder Hall, no relation, was making his first trips to the broadcast booth at the Gardens.

“We have searched the records and we can’t find any broadcaster in all of Canadian history who has worked 65 consecutive years,” Forbes informed the record gathering for the event at the Sawmill Banquet Centre.

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

No, this is not all the Edmonton Broadcasters Club Luncheon attendees. This is just those attending who worked with Bryan at some point in his/their careers!

That carefully-worded statement, ironically, differentiates Bryan from the man who likely holds the Canadian record for most years in broadcasting. Ironic, since the man I'm referring to, was the one who first hired Bryan at CKUA. And whose "consecutive years" were interrupted by CKUA's disappearance for a month or so in the late 1990s when they were shut down for financial reasons. Hall must have an Michael Jackson oxygen tank to sleep in when he goes home at night. His aging is incredibly slow.

As long as I remember him, from the 70's, he's always looked about 50 years of age. However, he's getting to be 90 and he only looks in his 60's.
