CJLI 700 AM Calgary

Postby i2thesky » Tue Mar 09, 2010 10:46 pm

The license for Touch Canada's new CJCA Clone was approved almost a year ago. I'll bet there are DX'rs all over north america anxiously awaiting the sign on. After all, when was the last time a 50 kw AM went on the air in Canada? I'll bet it was CFFR in 1984. Does anyone know the progress with this station.? I know it takes time to engineer, soil test, get approval for, acquire land and build tower arrays, but still...... I wonder if they have enough dough to purchase that expensive land down in the DeWinton or Millarville areas. Good Luck to them!

As reported here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5970&p=12783047#p12783047 ,
Touch's parent company filed for bankruptcy last June. No word on them emerging from that state.

I doubt anything will happen with CJLI until they do. After all, who would loan them any money?

Thanks, Jon for the update....

I can't see any broadcast company having any interest in purchasing touch canada assets except for possibly the 88.9 channel in Calgary. I would not expect them to be launching 90.5 anytime soon.

I wonder what Industry canada does about applicants who run out of money before they live up to their promise of performance? Do they get their licenses revoked?

Industry Canada should give broadcasters a time limit, say a year from when license is granted to signing on. If the applicant can not get it together by that date, they would have two choices, either to pay for an extension or submit in writing that they are relinquishing the license and frequency and the license would go to the runner up candidate.. With stipulations in place that companies with lots of money can't just buy their way into that license. If Golden west would have picked up that license in Red Deer, they would have opened up shop already. I don't think they have any financial problems.

Earlier this year Touch Canada received an extension until October 17, 2011 to get CKRD 90.5 Red Deer on the air. Off hand I can't recall anyone receiving an extension of that length in the past. Kind of reeks of good Christians within the Conservative party influencing the CRTC to me.

I believe the bankruptcy protection of Allarco Entertainment Inc. may not apply to Touch Canada Broadcasting Inc.. I believe the shareholding structure is somewhat different. Consequently, I believe that bankruptcy protection of Touch would require a separate court order.

At any rate, the point is still the same. If Allarco is in trouble, it means that there is probably little money to play around with at Touch since the ownership structure of both is likely similar.

On another point - I suspect that it would take considerable time to build a 50 KW AM. I remember it took over 2 years to get CFFR 660 on the air. I believe it was licensed in 1982 but definitely not on the air until 1984. On the other hand, CKRY (105.1) was licensed at the same time, and I think they were on the air in about 8 or 9 months.

I have no worries. Nobody's going to blank out my 710 ESPN Seattle. That has got to be the cleanest spot on the dial these days.

It takes very little time and space to stick up an FM tower and you can always piggyback on someone else's tower and building if you are willing to pay for the privilege.
Compare that to a 50Kw AM site with a building for the transmitter(s) and generator(s) with multiple towers and ground radials, tuning huts, etc.

Does anyone have any updates on this or is it completely dead?

The original construction permit expired back on April 24, 2011, however because the station has not been deleted from the Industry Canada database I can only assume that an extension was granted. Somtimes extensions don't appear on the CRTC site for months after the fact.

Is the construction site going to be near Millarville? For some reason if you get the GPS coordinates off of the FCC site, that would land you down in that area I would think the cheapest land available would be near Shepard near CHRB and CFAC

In between Black Diamond and Hartell off to the side of Highway 22. I was down there a month ago, the field is still bare. The property backs up to a hill. I'm told the water table is very high there.

Touch Canada Broadcasting (a division of Allarco Entertainment) has until April 24, 2013 to get Christian station CJLI 700 in Calgary on the air. This is the final extension to be granted by the CRTC.

Clock is ticking!

How's that field looking today? Any towers yet? ;)

Oh well...I wouldn't be surprised if nothing comes of this venture. I'm just interested because it's a new AM launch...definitely nothing exciting about the content of the proposed station, that's for sure. It's just a shame that a license approval would be abandoned like that. I wonder if the CRTC would put out another call for applications for this frequency? I'm sure there's a few groups out there that would love to have this license.

Hopefully they'll just let it fade into oblivion.

If God wanted them to be on the air, they'd be on the air by now.
