Federal government to hold auction for wireless spectrum in November

OTTAWA - The federal government will hold its long-awaited wireless spectrum auction in November.

Industry Minister Christian Paradis announced today the 700 MHz spectrum auction will start on Nov. 19.

The auction aims to have at least four wireless-service providers in every region of the country, which the government hopes will help lower consumer prices by increasing competition.

The announcement follows earlier steps to help smaller wireless providers enter the market by getting rid of foreign-investment restrictions.

Ottawa has also previously announced measures for cell tower sharing and requiring companies to provide wireless roaming to their competitors.

The government will also review its policy on transfer requests for spectrum licenses ahead of November's auction.

Wind mobile is listed by cancellsites as on the tower in the ballpark in SW Surrey (near White Rock) in the 2100 MHz band.

Verizon in the US is making much use of the 700 MHz band, though public safety agencies want part of it to replace present radio systems with a private version of cellular.

At a recent tech symposium some speakings were making dire predictions about lack of capacity to handle data demands, with increaing use of WiFi and picocells among probable solutions. (Picocells are an Internet-router sized box that functions as a limited capacity cell site and uses broadband Internet to communicate with the telco's network, Verizon and others in the US have embraced them.)

Me? I just want proper (complete) coverage for voice cellular.
