Wikipedia is 10 Years Old Today

Postby jon » Sat Jan 15, 2011 12:29 pm

Love it or hate it, Wikipedia is big: "the fifth most visited Website on the planet and totals more than 17 million pages in 270 languages, with more than 3.5 million articles in English and another 32 languages whose collections each top 100,000 pages." ref. - http://www.financialpost.com/news/techn ... story.html

And, as that Financial Post article indicates, there is a broadcast connection. "Sue Gardner [is] the Canadian born former CBC executive who now runs the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that oversees Wikipedia and about a dozen of its sister sites."

To read more about Wikipedia, it might be fun to read the Wikipedia article on Wikipedia:

I find Wikipedia to be a great source for the historical side of radio. Of course all the info has been copied from other websites, but at least it's all basically in one place.

You may be right in what you say Dan, it may be basically in one place, but it is there.

I think they deserve to celebrate, further, I wish them many more. :partyguy: :occasion4:

Wikipedia needs more authors/editors, plus financial help to keep the cause flowing. See the site for details.

There are limits, however.

From the Financial Post article mentioned above:

"Of course, not everyone is a believer in the Wikipedia way of doing things. The foundation has its critics, many of whom believe the site has a responsibility to its users to become more accurate.

"The easiest way to ensure a higher level of accuracy would be to hire editors and writers to curate the site, which would mean adding advertising to the site in order to pay their salaries.

"That’s not going to happen, according to Sue Gardner, the Canadian born former CBC executive who now runs the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organziation that oversees Wikipedia and about a dozen of its sister sites."
