Ch-ch-changes at Global BC

Postby flyonthewall » Thu Nov 01, 2012 5:22 pm

In his efforts to try and stay dry, the fly buzzed into Burnaby and right into Global behind a courier.
One of the things he heard was that Wesla Wong is leaving - apparently heading for Kelowna, but not necessarily to Global Okanagan. Word is that she has family in the Okanagan.
If true, this would leave a big gap in the Global BC weather booth with the upcoming departure of Wayne Cox, and as the station continues to prepare to launch the all-news channel in March.

This may not be the last departure from Enterprise as there are unconfirmed rumours that changes could be on the way at the higher payscales.

Let's hope they hire someone who talks slower than Wesla.

How about the guy from Slingblade; they could put him on with Steve Darling. Ah'd watch that, umm hmm.

Latest out of Burnaby has the fly thinking that Mark Madryga will stick with mornings while Kristi Gordon will move into the evening news shows. There's also speculation that Wesla Wong could still be part of Global BC as a weathercaster even though she's moving to the Okanagan.

Has Randene Neill been quietly demoted from News Hour Final anchor to reporter and Aaron McArthur has been quietly promoted to News Hour Final anchor?

Randene's been benched (from the anchor desk) all week and at least the last two nights (Wednesday/Thursday) she's been filing ordinary reports (Wednesday - Vancouver-False Creek Liberal nomination; Thursday - Kits Coast Guard closure outcry).

Any ideas if this is a permanent move and/or are there other changes afoot?

Demoting Randene would be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. McArthur and his newspaper headline way of speaking, just doesn't cut it...neither does his huge gasps in between stories.

Randene is way head and shoulders better...and her rapport with Squire Barnes is fun and entertaining.

After lucking out with a strong tailwind from Alberta, the fly blew back into Burnaby to get confirmation that Wesla Wong's last day at Global BC will be June 7.
As mentioned before she is moving back to her hometown of Kelowna.
No word on whether she will show up on CHBC, or as it is now blandly called, Global Okanagan.

You probably missed it but it appears Barry Deley let it slip on Friday's News Hour Final that Randene Neill is moving to weekends (anchoring the News Hour and News Final) starting in July.

Some things come to mind:

Who's taking over?

Isn't July an odd time to be changing anchors, rather than say, September?

With the new (or incoming) News Director, is he making his mark with a major overhaul to come, a la CTV where every show got parts of new team or a whole new team with Mike, Tamara and co. @ 6 being untouched?

As of right now, they still theoretically (unless the Deb/Lynn split week is permanent) have to find a permanent weekday Noon News Hour anchor since Sophie Lui dropped the shift (Deb Hope on Mon/Tues and Lynn Colliar on Wed-Fri)

Does flyonthewall or anyone else have any inside intel from Enterprise St?

That is correct.
Randene (who apparently wanted to get back to some reporting) is basically switching shifts with Anne Drewa.

I think this goes down July 1.

Well, Wesla just made her first appearance on Global Okanagan (CHBC) filling in for the vacationing Mike Roberts.
She'll be making more frequent forecasts come this fall as Mike starts semi-retirement. (Something I can appreciate!)
