Watching the YouTube video I started to think to myself, this has got to be a gag....there's no way this actually happened on live TV in a major market.

Host: Can I ask you something?
Guest: Inaudible response
Host: You like white boys?
Guest: I love the hell out of the white people…
Host: You love the hell….
Host: You know what they say…is it true what they say?
Guest: What they say?
Host: You know, they say once you go black…
Guest: You never go back!
Host: Yeah, well I’m saying you should try white!
Guest: I love white peo….
Host: …because it will keep your vagina very tight…BLEEP THAT! BLEEP THAT!

Unbelievable...I'm embarrassed for them. :downthumb: I wonder if any jobs were lost as a result of this? I can only assume that a fine from the FCC is on its way to KDOC.

The one thing that concerns me the most is this type of sentiment:
KDOC’s New Year’s Eve special was the most glorious train wreck to ever grace New Year’s television. It’s so unbelievably bad that it becomes so very, very good.

What they can be blamed for, however, is the astounding level of technical incompetence that happened while they were live on the air.
And it was beautiful.

So I guess, be prepared to see more of this on live television. It’s sure to be a ratings hit.

Happy New Year Everyone!

It worked for Chuck Barris and the Gong Show (with a tip of the hat to Pally Pasco).

My theory is that New Year's Eve started quite early in master control and they were already too drunk to roll anything they had on standby when disaster struck.

At least the folks who write dictionaries have a new example for the word incompetent.

Nice to know that no matter how big the market, you can still be small.

It’s been re-uploaded by so many people and I know that last week KDOC was desperately trying to get all these links taken down to no avail. Then they tried to spin the incident as intentional. However, I’m pretty darn sure it wasn’t. There’s no way that management would risk the fines or even perhaps their license by pulling such a stunt. Not to mention it is an incredibly stupid idea to even consider planning such a thing in the manner in which it played out on air.

I certainly enjoy a good laugh and the more often, the better. However, watching that video the other day didn’t make me laugh because what I saw wasn’t funny. What I saw were people’s dignities and careers being flushed down the toilet.

I know that it was a very late broadcast, but being that it was New Year's and the program was being viewed by families, I’d be interested to see what, if any, actions will be taken by the FCC and/or station management.

There may well be a grain of truth in the KDOC spin that this was intentional.

Many of the biggest broadcast disasters in history have begun with an idea thought of well in advance that was never really thought through to its logical/inevitable conclusion.

Or, try this one for a real recipe for disaster: a bunch of on-air folks acting out someone else's idea, not really understanding it and/or having such a huge ego that they think they are the masters of "improv", so don't need to think about it at all, but just "let it happen".

I well remember my own "New Year's Eve" TV disaster back in the late '60s.
It was at CJOC TV in Lethbridge where I was doing the six o'clock news and occasionally, the 11:20pm after the CBC National News.
I did the six as usual and then went out and started partying.
It was back in the day when media people pretty much had their heads in the pail as part of the routine.
Phil Smith was supposed to do the 11:20.
Unfortunately, he called in very sick at about 9:30 that evening.
The control room always had to know where we were so they sent out someone to drag me away from the party which was well into its cups by then and so was I.
I did the "newscast" if you could call it that and someone rolled videotape on it.
It was hilarious, to say the least.
I saw the tape once, days later and then it disappeared.
It probably was re-used, two inch tape was expensive back then.
So no evidence, other than the memories, exist.
