What WAS your favourite Oldie?

Postby jon » Mon Aug 22, 2011 9:59 am

Try to remember, if you still can, when you first turned on the radio to a Top 40 station and got instantly addicted (or however the process went for you). After a month or so of hearing Oldies played, what was your favourite?

For this 9 year old, it was early 1962, and my favourite Oldie was probably "Runaway" by Del Shannon. I certainly had enough opportunity to decide as it was perhaps the most frequently played Oldie on CFUN at the time.

Of course, 6 months later, the time that CFUN waited before playing a song that dropped off the charts, my favourite Oldie was suddenly my first favourite song from when I first listened to Dave McCormick count down the C-FUNtastic 50.

I hate threads like this because they tax my ever fading music memory to the max. I have a huge list of favourite singles from the 50's and 60's - I sort of refer to them as my TOP 20 Favourite Old Aged Pensioners' Blasts From The Past.

One such fav was "D in Love" by Cliff Richard. "When" by the Kalin Twins was another on the list. Just about anything by Stevie Wonder makes my top 20. Not on my list but a tune that brings back many happy memories would be one of the very first 45 RPM records I ever bought - "Charlie Brown" by the Coasters.

Oh please, do not ask for just ONE! There are too many to choose from!

A great thread which I hope gets lots of replies.

Yes, I know it is hard to pick just one Oldie as a favourite. Which is why I specifically went to when each of us first started listening to the Radio, Top 40 Radio in particular, as most people I've talked to had one song that really stood out as a favourite then. Admittedly, your first favourite current hit is easier to remember than your first favourite Oldie.

Picking one - impossible. But in situations, here's a few

top of the Hour - shotgun jingle into "Locomotion" by Little Eva

Make me feel good no matter what oldie - " Mother and Child Reunion" - Simon and Garfunkel

Beatles fav? Too many. But I still love so many of the songs and so many still stand up. The second side of Abbey Road still lays me out.

Favorite soul R and B " Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye...but "I'll be Doggone" is right up there.

Favorite guilty pleasure: Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians - " Shooting Rubberbands at the sky".

Favorite CFUN memory? Watching Brother Peter Benson, standing on his McCurdy turntable as it rotated....

I swear, I nearly fell down laughing.

Oh Boy ... where do I begin? Especially while on duty.

I'll need to contemplate this, and post a little later.

"Me and Julio" , "Graceland" , "Obvious Child" , any one of these by Mr. "Rhymin" Simon will move me to turn the volume up.
"Bang A Gong" by T Rex and "Spirit in the Sky" also both make the cut.

When I saw him he was only squatting on the turntable. You clearly got the platinum show.

"Palisades Park" by Freddie Cannon.
It was the first record I played on my first radio show in 1962, following my theme "Big Mr. C" by the Link Eddy Combo.
Being a jock in the '60's was the best, so much great music to choose from.

"Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" by The Casinos

What can I say? Great vocals (depressing tear jerk lyrics notwithstanding) and an organ solo to die for!

One caution - there was an awful, unworthy "stereo re-recording" floating around that was played over the air on occasion. In this case, accept only the genuine original 1967 mono original!

Well when I started listening to the radio in the 70`s,my favorite was I Want To Hold Your Hand-The Beatles.
But now I have many-Move It-Cliff Richard,Twilight Woman-49th Parallel,Love Itis-The Mandala.
I love nothing more than listening to the radio and hearing a song I`ve never heard before, and adding it to my wants list, because I`m a record collector with roughly 12,000 45`s.
Although these day the only place to hear stuff like that is on internet only stations or on UK,Australia or New Zealand and Irish stations.

I was sitting in an outhouse - a rather spacious, comfortable and well-ventilated two-holer if I recall correctly - with my 9-transistor radio (that's right 9... count 'em - 9 transistors) when on came Bobby Darin's "Dream Lover". In those two minutes, life, as I knew it, changed forever. And here I am now - posting to RadioWest when I should be out on the yacht... guiltlessly entertaining a bevy of bovine bimbettes. But, I digress.

After considerable reflection, I'm full of great suggestions as to my favourite "Solid Gold" hit of all time, but have at least narrowed it down to something by "The Queen of Soul," ...... Aretha Franklin.

Hopefully, I'll zero in on which of the excellent songs to post as my "fave" through the course of the day.

Speaking of Aretha, and the earlier comments about "Brother Benson," its his birthday on Friday the 26th. If my recollection is correct, he should be 63 this year. The tie-in between Ms Franklin and Brother B is that for my birthday one year, he gave me a copy of "Aretha's Greatest Hits," and I played the hell out of it.

That was a much-appreciated gift.

I think I'll phone Peter on Friday and wish him well.

My pal AWG has superb taste. " Since You've Been Gone" out of a hot 1-shotgun, kills.

Please pass along wishes to my gentle and talented friend, Peter Benson.

I miss both of you.

The oldies that stick with me from listening to a C-FUN Soundathon (either Summer '63 or maybe Christmas '63) are Ginny in The Mirror by Del Shannon, "D" In Love by Cliff Richard and Rave On by Buddy Holly.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Hagopian Old Bean ... your comment on my superb taste is much appreciated, and humbly accepted.

When I speak with "The Brother" on his birthday, I'll be certain to mention he has achieved legendary status among us on the forum where Chemtrails are the source of laughing derision, not a supposed breakthrough in unravelling government mind control conspiracies.

While trying to come up with my favourite song, I realized if I attempted to hold an "inside my head competition," weighing all the pros and cons associated with vocal ability, instrument performance, lyric content, time period and life experience represented by the overall effect of the song, which radio control room I was in when I first played it, and a hundred other transient thoughts, the debate could go on for a long, long time. So I stopped that agonizing process, and realized that while I was out in the boat, or driving in the car, or going about my business, that an "Earworm" song had been popping up frequently in the last 48 hours or so, and that song could be an appropriate selection to name here.

So, I have to announce (subject to future reconsideration) .... my favourite song for the purposes of this thread is....

Aretha Franklin - Don't Play That Song (You Lied)

Here's a link to the radio airplay version .... http://www.viddler.com/explore/missfunkacise/videos/3

And, here is the live performance from "The Cliff Richard Show" recorded in 1970 ..... http://youtu.be/KSoXJl2ALUk
