OTTAWA — Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger might be the next super-couple of Canadian rock.

People Magazine is reporting that the two are set to wed after Kroeger proposed with a 14-carat diamond ring.

The surprise engagement comes after Lavigne reportedly split from Los Angeles socialite Brody Jenner earlier this year.

This is the second marriage for Lavigne, 27, who filed for divorce from singer Deryck Whibley of the rock band Sum 41 in 2009.

Kroeger, 37, has never been married but was in a common-law relationship with a horse trainer from British Columbia until the pair separated in 2009.

According to People, Lavigne and Kroeger began a relationship while working together on Lavigne’s upcoming fifth studio album in the spring of 2012. After six months of dating, Kroeger popped the question on Aug. 8, the magazine said.

A 14-carat diamond ring could be worth as much as $1-million, the cost of the 14-carat band NHL player and former Ottawa Senator Mike Comrie proposed to girlfriend Hillary Duff with in 2010.

Lavigne is one of Canada’s most popular musical exports, selling millions of albums in Canada and the United States on the back of hits like Sk8er Boi, Complicated and Girlfriend.

Nickelback is widely reviled in the popular press but the group’s grunge-pop anthems have sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. Their single How You Remind Me was the top-played rock song of the 2000s, according to Nielsen Soundscan.
