Guess Who Rarity

Postby radiofan » Tue Sep 21, 2010 9:01 pm

If you're headed to the Starlight Casino to see The Guess Who
this weekend, a hightlight of the show should be their performance
of the recently discovered rarity "Amerian Woman"

Thanks to Dan Sys for passing this along.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

That is NOT the real Guess Who, not without Burton Cummings et al. It's a group that owns rights to the name with former bass player Jim Kale and drummer Gary Peterson aboard. :nonono:

Maybe that's part of the deal... they have to misspell a song name.

Actually, that sounds like a pretty good song title

Only saw them perform live once and that was, if memory serves, at half-time for one of the first, if not the very first BC Lion's football games held at the then brand-new BC Place Stadium (still think it should have been named Terry Fox Field).
This was pretty much the original line-up with both Cummings and Bachman in attendance and they sounded very good!
I was on the field level about 30 yards in front of the stage so my acoustic experience was optimal compared to how it must have been bouncing around off the roof and into the seats.
Daryl B, Burton's long-time friend, MC'd and intro'd the show.
Any one else remember this?

It just seems wrong to me to present yourself under the banner of that name, when you don't have the original lead vocalist or lead guitarist, or any of the main creators of the songs. It's
like a glorified "cover band", or karaoke to me. That's fine if you don't present yourself under the orginal banner of the Guess Who. Wouldn't pay to see this outfit without Cummings. It's the same story with Chicago,
Creedence, and a number of other groups, trying to pass themselves off. Maybe I'm a musical purist or snob. I mean, would people want to see the" Rolling Stones," if Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman were the only original
members on stage?

I find this kind of thing really cheesy.
The Chitlin, er, Casino Circuit is now populated by Boomer Bands, with a few or none of the original members, still trotting out tunes for the punters.

Remember when there were a whole raft of folks calling themselves "The Platters" - tooling around, stiffing audiences?

This seems like the same con.

Time to move on anyway.

Do you really want to see someone mangle your memories?

Someone ask Neumann Seinheiser about Grey Cup Parties with Russ "Too Loud" McLoud - NOW THERE'S a gold mine.

So, does this mean when the other Guess Who (with Cummings & Bachman) do a gig there could conceivably be two different Guess Who concerts happening at the same time in two different venues?

I agree Neumann, B.C. Place could still be renamed The Terry Fox Field after the renovations are completed next year. Realistically though I'm sure it will end up being dubbed as the Telus Field or the Price Smart Field or something as equally irritating.

This whole idea of turning large venues into office buildings where you pay for Naming Rights just doesn't work. As the terms of those Naming Rights contracts either keeps decreasing or, more likely, are renewed less frequently, or even goes to a higher bidder, we could soon see ourselves with a new name every year. A real killer for tourists and tourism. Lets see: Stanley Park becomes Staples Park in 2011, Office Depot Park in 2012, Kinkos Park in 2013, FedEx Park in 2014, UPS Park in 2015, Purolator Park in 2016....
