If it bleeds it leads

Postby Big Voice » Tue Jul 24, 2012 8:25 am

I pulled this quote off a blog from the U.S. The old saying "If it bleeds, it leads" comes to mind.

"In a perfect world, the news would air the Colorado shooting at the end of their programs as an RIP message with a single sentence noting that the primary suspect had been apprehended.
But the news-media is a business, and a psychotic killing sells because that's what the purchasing public buys, and the will of the market has become a higher god for us than any traditions of class. We are the problem. The commodification of every corner of life is the problem. There's no room left for moral ambition and responsible self-restraint. The news brainwashes all people into irrational fear, probably including the recluses on the edges of society and sanity."

Has the will of the market become a higher god than traditions of class? Or is this old news?

The Oxford Dictionary definition of 'News' is:
noun
1. newly received or noteworthy information
2. a broadcast or published report of news
3. information not previously known
4. a person or thing considered interesting enough to be reported in the news

When someone shoots up a movie theatre on opening night of a major new movie... that most certainly is a major leading news item...

However... Twenty four hours or more later, that same story is now old news... it is history... and it's time to move on to covering the next new story that's out there...

... like the fact that Assad now using fighter jets to bomb his own citizens, for instance...

There are legitimate follow-ups to advance the story and then there's exploitation.

Coverage of the shooter's court appearance certainly qualifies as the former. So does the report that one of the victims narrowly escaped a similar situation in Toronto only weeks earlier.

But the continuing parade of survivors and victims' friends and family members blubbering on cue in front of the camera is another matter. So is chasing down anybody who ever shared a sand box with the guy. I'm afraid we're in for a lot of that in the forseeable future.

And the bleeding doesn't always lead. News decisions are always subjective and often myopic. Case in point: The day four Canadian Mounties died in a shootout near Mayerthorpe, Alberta, the lead story on every network newscast in the good old US of A was Michael Jackson showing up at court in his jammies.

Follow-ups are fine... sure...But they are not lead stories five days on. Time to drop them down to a lower spot in the line up.

Call me again when somebody pulls another Jack Ruby....

The U.S. statistic is, a child is shot by a gun, every 10 minutes. All of these children deserve something better than being forgotten by the networks for a bigger story.

The bigger story here is the ridiculous US attitude towards guns... even in spite of these constantly occurring stories

They would far rather talk about the ever growing numbers of victims... than solve the much larger problem.

This other story is just as tragic... but it has been quickly forgotten and almost went unnoticed since happening less than a week before the theatre massacre...

The part of the story that bothered me the most was discussion about a female media person who died but also was at the Eatons Centre. It went on and on....on and on.

I turn off the TV when it bothers me. But each big story is often "cnn'ed" followed endless until something else comes up. I agree with John bring on Jack Ruby. :violent1:

That story is tragic, especially for his children, but it is also a karma for his stupidity.

Can anyone answer the questions posed?

"But the news-media is a business, and a psychotic killing sells because that's what the purchasing public buys, and the will of the market has become a higher god for us than any traditions of class. We are the problem."

Yes, the news-media is a business. The public seems to be buying what's selling. Are we (media) the problem?

Yes and no :phew:

There is more media today, and it is varied... Twitter is media etc.

This story got extended, similar to all the other mass shootings that occur. The news diggers run deep for anything that can be related. The media records the history of these events. Various angles are covered, some of which can be questioned as to having any actual value to the news event.

The thing that I notice most of all with the american tv media, is the excess speculation on the news event(s). The networks pay for people (lawyers as example) to cast what are supposed to be intelligent opinions, and most of which are filled with pure speculation. This is not news, this is entertainment disguised as news. It is also dangerous programming because it sways the opinions of the un-informed with artificial facts.

When this story broke here, my bet is most Canadians said, another nut with a gun down south. In some ways, it is news, and then... it is a bad movie being rerun.

It's old news.

Human interest requires that generating an audience involves content that embodies one, or any combination of the elements of: Conflict, Tragedy, Emotion, Controversy, Consequence, Prominence, Celebrity, Oddity, Suspense, Sex, Money, Danger, Progress, Inovation, First, Last, Proximity (Close or Distant). It has every been the same since the caveman town crier called out the news of the day. Only the technology has changed.

And for a large number of the unwashed masses, news is entertainment. And like addicts, they keep chasing higher highs and the money trench* of television will gladly try to provide.
