Another major Quebec FM station goes dark

Postby Dan Sys » Thu Mar 01, 2012 9:11 pm

On the heels of Cogeco turning out the lights at CJTS 104.5 in Sherbrooke comes word today that Groupe Radio Simard has shut down CFYX 93.3 in Rimouski stating that the station was not profitable. CFYX signed on the air in 2007 with 27,268 watts initially with a Classic Rock format. Towards the end the station appears to have flipped to a mix of Hot AC and Talk with some programming originating at Cogeco's CKOI and CHMP in Montreal.

Groupe Radio Simard had applied to remove certain conditions of the CFYX licence that prohibited them from advertising in nearby communities. Existing broadcasters in those communities filed interventions opposing the application and it was consequently rejected by the CRTC this past December. That denial must have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Who's to blame for the demise of CFYX? The CRTC for rejecting the application, or the broadcasters (one of which included Astral) for filing interventions? I guess there's only so many advertising dollars to go around. Sad situation.

At the moment the stations Facebook site is still active. You can translate the comments into English by clicking "See Translation":
