CJEC 91.9 Quebec City relaunches as WKND with Triple A

Postby Dan Sys » Wed Jun 20, 2012 5:41 pm

Not sure if there’s a meaning to the new branding WKND, or unless they just want to sound like an American station, but the former Cogeco property RYTHME 91.9 (CJEC) is now known as WKND with what appears to be a Triple A format under new owners Leclerc Communications.

Here is a description of the new format from their Facebook site (using Google Translate from French to English):

WKND 91.9 is a new radio station in Quebec that puts music in the heart of its programming. It offers listeners a unique sound based format Triple A. His catalog is composed of the best adult pop, contemporary rock, the indie-rock and pop-rock, from 2000 to present. Connected to local news at any time, WKND 91.9 is the radio people of Quebec: active, positive and full of energy!

I believe this will be the first time a Triple A format has been tried in the province of Quebec (correct me if I'm wrong).

Surely they must be trying to brand with the English word Weekend while flying under the Radar of the Language Police.

Weirder things have happened. I'd have to go back and find the article I wrote at the time, but around 1990, all of Edmonton's commercial FM stations were branded as K-something or a word that started with a K.

On my trips to Negril, Jamaica, I often listened to a station with studios in Mandeville which called itself KLAS, and used the jingle package of the US station .... which I had to hand it to them was pretty blatant for an operation with repeaters at several mountaintop locations on the island.

I do the same thing with respect to ripping off intellectual property, but with a much, much, much lower power on "99.1, Groove FM," here at the lake. Oh, and no repeaters either.....drat.

You are absolutely correct Jon. Scott Fybush had this to say on the Radio Info board:

They're calling it "Le weekend 91,9," billing it as "the station without a Monday." It's just coincidental that the nickname starts with a "W".

If AAA French is to make a go of it, I think Quebec City is good of a place as any to give it a go in Quebec. I wish them well in that market.

Only K97 and K-Lite come to mind. Must have been the influence of American/Spokane stations (credibilty by imitation or association).

Luckily no rap station emerged at the time, with possible call letters K-Rap.

Here is the list from my original article:
Left to right on the dial we had: King, K-Lite, K-97, Key-FM and Kissin'.

As for Crap, the closest we came was Crock.
