Izzy Might Have Preferred Asper Avenue

The City of Winnipeg has renamed Waterfront Drive at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) after Izzy Asper. Family members of the late CanWest Global Communications founder were on hand Monday as the mayor and city officials conducted the dedication of Israel Asper Way. The CMHR, set to open in September, began as Asper’s dream and has grown to become a national museum focused on the universal topic of human rights. (Broadcast Dialogue)

Izzy Asper's vision now sits on a street that bears his name.

The City of Winnipeg renamed the stretch of road in front of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to Israel Asper Way this morning. The renaming -- an official designation, not an honorary nod -- was voted through city council last fall.

Mayor Sam Katz, members of the Asper family and dozens of friends and well-wishers were on hand for the announcement in front of the museum this morning.

The name change, which replaces Waterfront Drive, runs from William Stephenson Way past the museum to Forks Market Road.

Waterfront Drive continues to run north of William Stephenson, past Shaw Park and Stephen Juba Park to Higgins Avenue.

Asper, a former media mogul and longtime pillar of the community, passed away in 2003. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is scheduled to open to the public in September.
