Winnipeg's Power 97 runs out of power

radioINSIGHT and The Winnipeg Free Press are both reporting that Winnipeg's Power 97 (owned by Corus) will have a new format at 8AM Friday.

Corus Rock “Power 97” 97.5 CJKR-FM Winnipeg is currently stunting with a tease that “Something BIG Is Coming Tomorrow”.

CJKR ended its Rock format at noon today following Metallica’s “Fade To Black” and is looping a sweeper promoting the 8am launch. At that time it is expected the station will flip to Country “97.5 Big-FM“. 975BigFM.com was registered earlier this month by Corus.

Corus let go of CJKR morning co-host TJ Connors and afternoon host Holly Bausman as part of layoffs at its Winnipeg cluster earlier this week. A flip to Country would place CJKR in direct competition with Jim Pattison Broadcast Group’s “QX104” CFQX-FM. While “Power 97.5” registered a 2.6 share in the Fall 2014 Numeris ratings, CFQX-FM was third overall in the market and the top music station with a 9.8 share

Corus Entertainment is promising big changes to Power 97 FM.
Listeners will have to tune in Friday at 8 a.m. to find out for sure.

The station laid off two morning personalities, Holly Bausman and TJ Connors, earlier this week, suggesting changes were in store for the hard-rock station.

On Thursday, the usual sounds from artists such as AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne were replaced with a promo for Friday’s announcement.

The station’s Twitter account posted a promo Thursday, saying "Something big is coming tomorrow," on a denim background.

Power 97 fell to 12th in Winnipeg’s 15-station radio standings with 2.6 per cent of the 12-and-older listening audience, according to ratings released by Numeris in November 2014. In Numeris’s spring ratings, Power 97 was in 10th place at 4.6 per cent of city’s listening audience.

Corus Entertainment operates two other stations in Winnipeg, CJOB-AM and 99.1 Fresh FM.

Ottawa's done it, Winnipeg's about to do it, how long til one of the underperformers in Calgary gets on board? CKRY is in desperate need of some competition. There's a 5 share up for grabs in Cowtown, who's it going to be? Up! AMP and KOOL are all viable candidates. The peanut whistle licensed to Strathmore will have the effect of a popcorn fart in Calgary. A full power signal could do some damage.

It'd be fun to see some Country airwars between Pattison and Corus in both Winnipeg and Calgary.

I find it amusing and slightly insulting that the image off "denim" automatically made everyone assume the flip was going to be Country. That's the challenge with the country format ... it has a hard time still fighting off old stereotypes which is why often, despite significant ratings, companies don't know how to properly sell and market the station to their advertising base and end up abandoning the format later because they couldn't figure out how to make money with it. And the issue really boils down to the suits and programmers who are in charge automatically align country music with blue jeans and farmers.

In all likelihood it's about cost cutting and centralizing the delivery of this Can Con factored music programming from one location, likely Corus in Toronto. I guess Corus thinks they have a sort of pabulum winning format for the masses at their rock/classic rock properties.

By the looks of the Big 97.5 website, the station is only live in AM and PM Drive.

The mid-day host is Robin LaRose, who handles the same shift at Rock 101 in Vancouver. Hmmmm, I wonder which one is VT'd?

6PM - Mid features Jeff Woods. Isn't he at Corus Toronto?

So nice to see larger market radio following the lead of small market Golden West, Vista and NewCap stations.

Yeah I know, but I still have to hand it it to Robin LaRose who has survived decades and thrived in a business that is well known for discarding to the remnant bin those who have stayed too long or have become to expensive to keep. Robin does NOT come cheap. He has made himself an asset of value. That's how it's done

Why not just have one jock for each shift - for an entire chain?
They record the bits and upload 'em and throw in a few local bits, and no ones 'the wiser'. Just think of the money they can save? News? Just have the station take the feed from the Mother Ship and have the OP do the weather.
The shareholders will love it.
Program Directors? GONE. Producers? Gone.

General Managers, and Sales Managers will combine and become the Brand manager.

Sell your buildings and get your station into one of the zillions of vacant one bedroom condos, in Yaletown. RENTED. All you are is a computer and a link to the TX.
Oh and all the web work is done at the Mothership.

No need for local sales force - do it all by Skype.
Local? What's local?

Gotta love the Internet!

Mr. Jeffries... we are all really happy that you have recently discovered this thing called the Internet and that it has, wait for it... RADIO STATIONS on it.
Please stop mentioning it in every second post.
The rest of us have known about it for years.
